Grandmother Collins

Grandmother Collins, a little old lady who had known life here for almost a 
century, joined the caravan of her pioneer friends late Sunday night [ July 
5th ]. 

Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church by Rev. G. LYLE SMITH, a close 
friend whose birthday was on the same day as Grandmother Collins and observed 
the date with her, assisted by Rev. W. A. MCCONNELL and Rev. ALBERT MCCLELLAN. 
Interment was in the Waurika cemetery. 

ALABAMA HORTON was born Dec. 5, 1847 in DeKalb County, Alabama, daughter 
of 'Uncle PRESTON and Aunt BETSY' HORTON whose sons and daughters number 16, 14 
growing to maturity. From this remarkable large family, to survive the passing 
of their sister are: Mrs. MARTHA SELLERS age 99, and Mrs. PARLIE JONES, 98, 
both of Arizona, Mrs. IDA SMITH, 85, of Oak Grove, Alabama, Mrs. DOUG COLEMAN, 
age 83, of Fort Payne, Alabama, GRIFFIN HORTON, age 78 and JOHN HORTON, age 75, 
of Porterville, Alabama.

She grew up on her parents' plantation and on June 28, 1866, she was united in 
marriage with A. G. COLLINS at Oak Grove, Alabama. They began married life with 
little except her dowry, a great deal of ambition, and a desire to succeed. . 
She had a badly crippled hand sustained when the sorghum mill jammed and none 
of the help knew anything except yell for Miss Bama. She released it but her 
hand was permanently injured. The Collins were blessed with 11 children: EDWIN 
who died when 10 days old, ADA and RHODA who died ages 4 and 5 within a week of 
each other, ROBERT who died at 22 while a medical student; surviving sons and 
daughters are Mrs. GEORGIA DOSS, Mrs. LILLIE MAY, Dr. D. B. COLLINS, Mrs. 
BIRDIE HODGE, A. G. COLLINS, JOHN COLLINS and Mrs. BELLE SECKMAN, all of whom 
miss their mother greatly. There are 25 living grandchildren, 38 great-
grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, PHILIP DEAN and HAROLD GENE 
TOTTY of Ryan.

In 1903 the Collins family left Alabama and came to Sugden, then to Big Pasture 
at its opening, then to New Mexico, then back to Jefferson County where they 
became land owners, farmers and stockmen. In later years Mr. and Mrs. Collins 
moved to Waurika and built a home next to their son, Dr. D. B. COLLINS, whose 
special charge they were until Mr. Collins died Dec. 22, 1932. On Dec. 1, 1934, 
Grandmother Collins told Dr. Collins told she wanted to move to the Waurika 
hospital and since that time she has lived there.
