He went to that place for a course of medical treatment. The remains arrived here Tuesday evening for interment. He was born in York District, S. C., about 1821, and removed to this state in 1837. He was Judge of Probate of Autauga County for one term, and Circuit Clerk of the same county for many years. The body was interred in our city cemetery, yesterday morning. " (1) The Wetumpka Times, Thursday, Aug. 27, 1885 "Our community was shocked on last Tuesday when it was announced that Judge G. W. Benson, of this place, had suddenly died at Richmond, Indiana. As we noticed in our last issue, this gentleman had left the week previous with his wife and son for Indiana, to receive special treatment. He lived only a few days after getting there. His remains arrived Tuesday night and was followed to its last resting place Wednesday morning by a large concourse of relatives and friends. Judge Benson was born and partially raised in York District, South Carolina, and removed to Autauga County, in this state, with his parents, in 1833. Shortly after his majority, he married Miss Mary Jordan and to whom were born five children. Mrs. Dank Booth, of Autauga, Mrs. Andrew Rucker, of Elmore Co., Mrs. David Campbell and Mr. Jeff Benson, of Texas, and Mrs. E. A. Stephens, of Greenville, Ala. With the exception of Mrs. Campbell, all of the children were at the funeral. Judge Benson was elected at early age as clerk of the Circuit Court of Autauga County, and subsequently held the office of Probate Judge, until removed by the Reconstruction acts of Congress. He then made his residence in Elmore County, since which time he has been employed in the Probate Judge's office. Judge Benson was no ordinary man. His mental faculties were strong, active, and incisive. His judgement was wonderfully equipoised and had the studied and practiced law, as a profession, few men in the state could have taken higher rank at the bar or reflected greater credit on the judicial ermine. His tastes were aesthetically and none loved the beautiful in nature more than he. As an officer, he was thoroughly conscientious. A kind neighbor, a most devoted and loving husband and father. If he had faults let them be buried with him. His virtues let us imitate. May the green grass grow gently over his grave. He was 64 years of age."
