Cain, aged 33 years, quietly, serenely passed away to the spirit land. Indeed, so calm were her last moments, that the anxious loved ones and devoted friends who had so long and faithfully watched over her, could scarcely realize when the immortal part left its earthly casket, or the 'silver cord was loosed.' Such was her end, a calm release No clinging to this mortal clod; She closed her eyes and stood in peace, Before a smiling God This placid, tranquil close, was beautifully illustrative of life, remarkable for its gentleness, its loveliness and its purity. Around the home fires, her virtues shone brightest, and here about her, clustered all the fond, devoted affections of the unbroken circle. But this all attractive link has been severed and the 'one vancant chair' at last appears in this once happy household. We are taught that 'whom the Lord loveth, he chasteneth;' but oh! How difficult it is, for the human heart to bow in meekness, to these sad dispensations, and to be able to 'kiss the smiter's rod.' And yet, a life like her's affords abundant assurance to the loving ones who still linger behind that for her, 'it is better, far better to go, where pain, sin and sorrow can never intrude.' Annie was candid, truthful, sincere in all her words and acts; and those who knew her most intimately, loved her best and appreciated her friendship most. The writer of this brief tribute knew her long and well, and with no desire to intrude upon the sanctity of private grief, can truthfully say, that according to his estimate of her character, as daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend, she was without 'spot or blemish,' a true Christian woman. If words could assuage or soften, the grief of him, who is most bereaved, in this trying affliction, or of those precious jewels around him, most gladly would they be spoken; but He alone who directed the shaft can heal the wounds. To Him may they go and find consolation." (1) (1) The People's Banner; Saturday, June 26, 1875 Note: Annie E.
