JANE HEIKEN CRITICALLY INJURED IN AUTO ACCIDENT Her many friends in Russellville and Franklin County, where she was born and reared, learned with deep regret of the critical injuries sustained in an automobile accident last Saturday by Mrs. Jane Heiken of Cherryvale, Kansas. Mrs. Heiken was returning home with her two children from a holiday visit to relatives at Bushton, Kansas when the accident occurred. She suffered severe head contusions and both legs were broken. Full details of the accident were not learned except that the children escaped serious injuries. Immediately after receipt of the message notifying them of the critical injuries to Mrs. Heiken, her mother, Mrs. W.S. Douglass, and her brother, Raymond Douglass, left immediately for her bedside. Messages received Wednesday said there apparently was no hope for Mrs. Heiken's recovery but Thursday a message came stating that her condition showed slight improvement which gave hope that she might survive. Mrs. Heiken will be remembered here as Miss Janie Douglass, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Douglass, who was one of the city's most popular young ladies. Some years ago she was married to Mr. Heiken who died several years ago in Kansas. She has two children, a son and daughter. The three visited Mr. and Mrs. Douglass here last summer. ____ ROUTE 5 News We are glad to report that Mr. Pete Morgan is improving after a very serious illness. __ Mrs. Addie Trapp has returned to her home in Waynesboro, Tenn., after a week's visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Snider. __ Mr. Luther McBride and son Will and granddaughter Frances were in Tennessee on business last weekend. __ A family reunion was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Snider on Thursday, December 13th. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Snider and children, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Snider, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Snider and children, Mr. and Mrs. Wes Stevens of Shriver, Montana, Mrs. Addie Trapp of Waynesboro, Tenn., Mr. Garnet Snider, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. McBride and children and Mrs. Margaret Clark of Phil Campbell. A large dinner was enjoyed by everyone. __ Mrs. Mollie Richardson and her son Lelon and Mr. Tom Clay visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Snider on Sunday. __ Mr. Jesse Hill and Miss Mary Morgan of Waco were married December 10th. We wish for them a long and happy wedded life. __ MOUNTAIN HOME News Mr. and Mrs. Preston Entreken spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Massey. __ Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Quinn spent Saturday night with Mr. and Mrs. Alpha Quinn. __ Mr. Edward Quinn is in Mississippi spending the holidays with relatives. __ DEATH TAKES R.P. McDOWELL, PIONEER Robert P. McDowell, aged 81, pioneer resident of Franklin County, passed away Saturday at his home in Isbell, at 11:05 o'clock, following an illness extending over a period of two years. He had been seriously ill for the past three weeks. The deceased came to Russellville 50 years ago from South Carolina, living here for 30 years before removing to the rural section of the county. He was a retired farmer at the time of his death. Funeral services were held at 11 o'clock Sunday morning at the Belgreen church with the Rev. Campbell conducting the final rites. Interment followed in the adjoining cemetery with Brown directing. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sallie McDowell; four sons, H.C., T.V., M.P .and W.K. McDowell, all of Russellville and three daughters, Mrs. Ora Bolding of Leonard, Texas; Mrs. Mollie Willis of Russellville and Mrs. Callie Johnson of Winfield. ____ MRS. M.A. HURST DIES AT HER HOME IN TEXAS Word was received here this week from Quanah, Texas, of the death of Mrs. M.A. Hurst, who died early Christmas morning at the family home in that state. The news of her passing will bring deep sorrow and sympathy to her many relatives and friends in this vicinity. Mrs. Hurst, before her marriage, was Miss Anna Lee Hooper. She was born five miles northeast of Russellville September 7, 1881. For many years before her marriage she worked in the post office here. About two years after her marriage which occurred in 1905, she moved with her husband to Quanah, Texas, remaining there until 1912 when they moved back to this place. Two years later they returned to Quanah where she lived until her death. She had visited at Russellville frequently since 1914 and thus she had renewed the acquaintances with her childhood friends. Besides her husband, M.A. Hurst, and three sons, Jack of Wellington, Texas; Ned of Eldorado, Okla; and Bob who was at home, she is survived by one brother, Bud Hooper of this place; a sister, Mrs. J.M. Wilson who recently lived five miles northeast of town but now lives with a daughter at Landersville, and numerous other relatives. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hurst were popular among the people of Russellville during their residence here. They were members and faithful workers of the Baptist Church. The friends and acquaintances of the deceased extend condolence to the bereaved relatives of this community whose hearts are saddened at the ending of life's highway of the one they so dearly loved. ____ ISOM A. WOOD DIES AT THE AGE OF EIGHTY-ONE Mr. Isom A. Wood, 81, died at his home in Newburg at 6:30 o'clock Monday morning after a short illness. Funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sandy Hester near Rockwood, Wednesday afternoon, Rev. W. Love of Spruce Pine officiating, with Mr. J.H. Walston assisting. Interment followed at the Graham cemetery, Spry directing. A quartette, composed of Misses Mattie and Ruby Auten, Mr. C.O. Stout and Mr. Emmett Nash, sang several hymns. Mr. Wood was a lifelong resident of Franklin County, a member of the Missionary Baptist church and one time member of the Board of County Commissioners. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Sandy Hester and Mrs. Eugene Hovater; four sons, John, L.T., and Bynum Wood, all of Franklin County, and J.C. Wood of Beaver Falls, PA and a number of grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. John Sibley of Russellville and a brother Felix Wood of Belgreen. Pallbearers were his six grandsons and honorary pallbearers were James F. Hester, O.E. Wood, Joe Hargett, Neal Sibley, Dan Duncan, Euclid Cleere and John F. Hester. ___ EUGENE ELLIS KILLED IN GRAVEL PIT; LIVED IN RUSSELLVILLE IN 1931 Eugene Ellis, 30, was crushed to death last Thursday morning in a cave-in at a gravel pit four miles west of Sardis, Miss. It was the first day he had worked on the job. Working at the pit with Ellis were James Bailey and two negroes. They were eating lunch when the cave-in occurred and a mass of gravel and dirt crashed, barely missing the other workers. An examination showed that Ellis was badly crushed. His parents reside at Como, Miss. Mr. Ellis formerly lived in Russellville where he was employed in a laundry operated by his father-in-law, Mr. A.C. Rouse, whose daughter, Miss Stella Rouse, he married. He left Russellville in May 1931. Besides his widow he is survived by a six month old child. Mrs. Ellis returned from Sardis last Friday with her father and will make her home here again. Her friends sympathize with her in her bereavement. ____ MAN ON TRESTLE KILLED BY TRAIN Earl A. Gossett, 78, of Phil Campbell, was instantly killed when he was struck by a Mobile & Ohio freight train several days ago while Gossett was walking on a trestle near Calumet. He was on his way to visit relatives at Bankhead and was within two miles of his destination when he was killed. Findings of accidental death was reported by Coroner Joe Legg. Funeral services were held Friday at Phil Campbell. ____ MRS. ELIZA MCINTOSH DIES IN BIRMINGHAM Mrs. Eliza Hargett McIntosh, one of Russellville's pioneer women, died last Sunday morning at 3 o'clock at the home of her adopted daughter, Mrs. Annie Petree Oliver, West End, Birmingham. She was eighty years of age. The remains were brought to Russellville Monday evening and conveyed to the home of Mrs. Kate McIntosh where they remained until Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock, when funeral rites were conducted at the First Baptist Church by Rev. J.F.T. Brown. Interment was in K. of P. Cemetery, Ridout, of Birmingham, directing. Pallbearers were W.W. Ramsey, C.E. Wilson Jr., William Stell, G.W. McIntosh, Foster Gavin and Jones Hargett. Mrs. McIntosh was born and reared in Franklin County and resided here until the death of her husband, Albert McIntosh some ten years ago. She had since made her home with Mrs. Annie Petree Oliver in Birmingham. Mrs. McIntosh was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Russellville and also one of the organizers of the Woman's Missionary Society of the church. She was a devoted member throughout her life. In addition to other relatives, Mrs. McIntosh is survived by a brother Mr. John W. Hargett. Besides immediate relatives, those from Birmingham attending Mrs. McIntosh's funeral were Judge J.D. Petree, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Craven and Messrs. Claussen and Simmons. ____ ROUTE 8 News Drewey Myrick spent the christmas holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Myrick. __ Mrs. Jake Johnson of Tuscumbia has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. E.E. McCollum. __ Mr. and Mrs. Zollie Copeland of Sheffield spent Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Vandiver and family. __ Mr. Arvel McCleskey spent Saturday night with his brother, A.B. Heflin and Howell Heflin A delicious dinner was served, carrying out the christmas color scheme, after which Mr. Nabers was showered with a number of gifts. ________ Miss Maxine Wheeler, age 21, of Wheeler Mountain, Tuscumbia route 2, passed away at the Colbert County Hospital Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Miss Wheeler was a member of one of the county's oldest and most respected families and was a popular member of the younger set of the community. She had a host of friends who are deeply grieved at her passing. She was a devoted member of the Church of Christ. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Crooked Oak Church with Elder C.L. Overturf of the Sheffield Church of Christ, assisted by Jack Myers, minister of the Tuscumbia Church of Christ, conducting the final rites. Interment followed in the adjoining cemetery with Brown directing at the grave. Surviving are her parents, Mr.and Mrs. C.C. Wheeler, six sisters, Misses Anne, Lois, Bonnie, Audrey and Alene all of Tuscumbia; and Mrs. James Westmoreland of Florence and her grandmother Mrs. Lula James Northington of Red Bay. Active pallbearers were James Blankenshop, Thomas Crowe, Allen Logel, Martin Myhan, Albert McCorkle, James Edwards and Lester Johnson. ___ Dr. T.P.W. Brooks, age 87, died at his home in Hackleburg, Saturday, December 15th. He was the father of 16 children, 11 of whom survive. Dr. Brooks was the oldest of the well known Brooks family. A brother and sister survive. Grandsons and great grandsons were active and honorary pallbearers and granddaughters were flower girls. __ Mr. Joe Rollins, age 80, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Isbell, Thursday afternoon after an extended illness. Surviving are several children, two of whom, Mrs. John Isbell and Mrs. Phineas Ham, live in Red Bay. ___ Mr. Billy Tims, age 76, died at his home two miles north of here, Sunday Dec. 2 (?) . He was born and reared in Tishomingo county and lived there until four years ago. Surviving are ten children: Robert and Mid Tims, Mrs. Almedia Fancher, Mrs. Salvina Patterson, Mrs. Effie Fowler of Belmont route and Bud, Vander, Charlie Tims and Misses Artie and Flossie Tims of Red Bay route. ____ Eugene Grady, 20, of Tremont, was killed and Otto Miller, Eric Gober and Clovis Fuller and Miss Myrtle Lee Miller, all of Red Bay, were painfully injured in a wreck near Tremont on Thursday evening about 6 o'clock. The car driven by Grady topped a hill and crashed with another car. The other occupant of the Grady car, Hob Wright was ininjured. ____ Mrs. L.A. Nichols and baby of New Albany are visiting her mother Mrs. R.S. Gray this week. __ Mr. C. Shirey of Birmingham is visiting his daughter Mrs. Trenton Stell and Mr. Stell. __ Mrs. Golden Berry of Tupelo is the guest of her parents Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Hughes this week. __ Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Barnes and family of Scotsboro, Ala., have moved to the O.T. CLARK MOODY DIES Mrs. Clark Moody, aged 80, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Buford Thomason, near Cherokee, Wednesday night, following a stroke of paralysis. Funeral services will be held in Cherokee on Friday. Mrs. Moody was the mother of Mr. J.R. Moody of Russellville. She was born and reared in Franklin County and a member of the Baptist Church. Before her marriage she was Miss Mattie Kimbrough of Frankfort. She is survived by three sons, J.R. Moody of Russellville; Clarence Moody of Cherokee, and Cash Moody of Dawson Springs, Ky; one daughter, Mrs. Buford Thomason of Cherokee; a sister, Mrs. Amanda Rickard of Cherokee and a brother W.B. Kimbrough of Route 2. ____ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, January 10, 1935 SERIOUS CUTTING AFFRAY OCCURS AT SPRUCE PINE M.H. McMurray is under treatment for knife wounds at the Russellville Hospital and N.P. McDougall and his son James Obie are held in the county jail as his assailants. All reside on Route 1, Spruce Pine. Mr. McMurray was stabbed in the right lung and leaders in his right hand were severed during the altercation with the McDougalls which took place last Saturday in a barber shop at Spruce Pine. Mr. McMurray was rushed to the hospital for treatment. The McDougalls were placed under arrest and lodged in jail on Sunday, bail being denied pending the outcome of McMurray's injuries. The cause of the difficulty between the men was not definitely learned. Both McMurray and McDougall are well known in the county. ____ MRS. MOODY LAID TO REST Funeral services for Mrs. Millie Ann Moody, aged 80, who passed away Thursday morning at 1 o'clock at her home in Cherokee were held Friday morning. Services were held at the residence of her son C.E. Moody in Cherokee with Rev. Payne conducting final rites. Interment followed in the Riverton cemetery with Brown service directing. The deceased who had passed her eightieth anniversary only two days prior to her death had lived practically all of her life in Colbert county and had a wide circle of friends who were deeply grieved at her death. Surviving are three sons, C.E. Moody of Cherokee; J.R. Moody Jr. of Russellville and Cash Moody of Kentucky and a daughter Mrs. Buford Thomason of Cherokee. _____ MRS. JANE HEIKEN DIES OF INJURIES Mrs. Jane Heiken passed away last Friday morning at her home in Cherryvale, Kansas, following an automobile accident the preceding Saturday as she and her two young children were returning from Bushton, Kansas where they had spent the holidays with relatives. Mr. W.S. Douglass, her father, left immediately for Cherryvale upon being advised of her death. Mrs. Douglass and other members of the family reached her bedside soon after the accident occurred. The untimely death of Mrs. Heiken is deeply regretted by her many friends in Russellville where she was reared. She was very popular with a large circle of friends. She is survived by a small son and daughter, her parents and several brothers and sisters, who have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. ____ SPRUCE PINE News Mrs. W.O. Thompson who is critically ill in a Russellville hospital, is reported showing slight improvement. __ Dale Freeman of Fort Bragg, N.C. arrived this week to stay with his mother Mrs. Eva Freeman. __ RED BAY AND VICINITY News Mrs. Roscoe Stidham spent the weekend in Jasper with her mother Mrs. Bostick. __ Mrs. C.W. West was called to Fulton on Sunday due to the serious illness of her brother in law, Mr. Neal Brown. __ Mrs. Carl Foote of Helena, Ark., is at the bedside of her mother, Mrs. Marion Regans who is seriously ill at her home here. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, January 17, 1935 MR. AND MRS. DOUGLASS RETURN FROM SAD MISSION Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Douglass returned Monday night from Cherryvale, Kansas where they were called by the tragic accident to their daughter Mrs. Jane Heiken who as fatally injured in an automobile accident Dec. 28th as she and her two children were returning from a visit to relatives at Bushton, Kansas. Mrs. Heiken succumbed January 4th. Returning with Mr. and Mrs. Douglass, to make their home with them were Mrs. Heiken's two children, Douglass 10, and Mary Carolyn, 5. Mr. Clark Douglass also accompanied his parents to Russellville. He left Tuesday for his home in Oklahoma. ____ DARCUS POSS DIES Darcus Poss, age 81, a highly respected citizen of Franklin County, passed away Monday morning at 9:35 o'clock at his home in Russellville, route 2, following a lengthy illness. The deceased was a native of Georgia, coming to Franklin County more than 40 years ago to make his home. He was a devoted member of the Baptist Church and had a host of friends who were deeply grieved at his death. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Burnt Hill Church with Rev. W. Love conducting final rites. Interment followed in the adjoining cemetery with Brown service directing. Surviving are two sons, J.D. and O.O. Poss of Russellville and three daughters, Mrs. R.M. Kimbrough, Mrs. Lizzie Fuller and Miss Sallie Poss of Russellville. ___ "UNCLE" ROBERT BULLEN A VISITOR TO RUSSELLVILLE The Times office was honored with a visit Thursday from "Uncle" Robert Bullen of Halltown, who is in his ninety-second year, having passed the ninety-first milepost Sept. 12th, last. "Uncle" Robert is one of Franklin County's oldest and most respected citizens. Those who know him best are unstinted in their praise of his character, his generosity and desire to help others through life. A Republican, he sometimes votes the Democratic ticket when he has a friend whom he thinks is deserving of the office. He was born and reared in Franklin County but during the War Between the States he fought on the Union side of the conflict. He is a staunch Methodist and the father of four living children; Messrs. Tom, Ed and Fayette Bullen and Mrs. J.C. Weatherford. _____ MCMURRAY LEAVES HOSPITAL: McDOUGALLS ARE RELEASED ON BOND M.H. McMurray of Spruce Pine, Route 1, was dismissed from the Russellville Hospital several days ago, having recovered from knife wounds alleged to have been inflicted by N.P. McDougall and son James Obie at Spruce Pine on Saturday January 5th. The McDougalls are on a technical charge of assault with intent to murder, and have been released from jail, where they were held without bail pending the outcome of Mr. McMurray's wounds. Their bond was set at $2000. each. ____ FROG POND News Oscar Grissom, who has been seriously ill, is able to be out again. __ Charlie Weems left Thursday for a visit to relatives in Texas. __ Mrs. Leonard Roberson and family spent Saturday night with Mrs. Roberson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Watson. __ RED BAY and VICINITY News MRS. MARION REGANS DIES Mrs. Marion Regans, age 54, died at her home here Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, after several months of suffering from cancer. She as a loyal member of the Baptist Church. Her sweet disposition won her many friends. She was always kind and considerate of others. The funeral was held from the Baptist church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock with Rev. Joe Hughes, Rev. Charles Nelson and Rev. Heflin officiating. Burial was in city cemetery with Spry directing. Surviving are her husband, there sons, Fred Regans of Red Level and Roy and Gray Regans of Red Bay; six daughters, Mrs. Carl Foster of Snow Lake, Ark.; Mrs. B.E. Thornton, Mrs. Lee Hamilton, Mrs. Velva B. Brown and Misses Reedie and Fannie Sue Regans all of Red Bay; three brothers, Flavos Fikes of Belzoni, Miss., and Walter and Luther Fikes of Fulton, Miss; one half sister Miss Louise Fikes of Jasper and eight grandchildren. Active pallbearers were T.D. Cleveland, J.H. McKinney, M.C. Lowery, Fred Bostick, Fred McCarthy, and Dr. Grady Jordan. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Jim Harden of Fairview, Miss., were Saturday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dock Seagers. __ CENTER POINT News Mr. J.J. Kelley has returned from Moulton where he spent several weeks with his children. __ Mr. W.M. Gibson was a new years' visitor to Arley where he visited his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Gibson. __ Mrs, Ila Chastain spent a few days with her sister, Mrs. J.L. Williams last week. __ Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Landers and children of Moulton visited Mrs. Landers' parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Kelley recently. __ SPRUCE PINE, RT. 1 News Basil Entrekin fell from a mule and broke his arm and spent several days in the hospital. __ Mrs. Ruth Graham and Preston Devaney were married on Saturday. __ LOCAL News Mrs. J.C. Carter and daughter Miss Mary Kate Carter, left Tuesday for Dallas, Texas to reside. Their departure is deeply regretted y their many friends in Russellville and Franklin County. ___ Mrs. R.E. Wardlaw is very ill at the home of her sister, Mrs. W.M. Chenault at Decatur. __ Mrs. D.C. Nix was removed the past week to the hospital in Florence where her condition is reported improved. __ MRS. JULIA MOORE Mrs. Julia Moore, widow of the late Joe Moore, died at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Hansford King in Russellville January 14th at the age of 74 years, four months and two days. She was laid to rest in Duncan Creek cemetery in the presence of many friends. Mr. J.H. Walston officiated. Mrs. Moore was born and reared in Franklin County. For the past few years she had made her home with Mrs. King and her husband. She had been helpless for over two years. Mr. and Mrs. King were very attentive to her and did everything in their power to make her comfortable. She leaves a daughter and six grandchildren in Texas, two brothers of near Russellville ad well as many friends.
