Tuscaloosa News 4/9//2010 AKRON Talley N. Kitchens, age 94, died April 7, 2010, at his home near Akron. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Five Mile Primitive Baptist Church near Akron, Alabama, with Elders Bobby Payne, Luke Laird, and James Abernathy officiating. Burial will follow in the Five Mile Church Cemetery with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Mr. Kitchens was preceded in death by his wonderful wife of 66 years, Sue Jenson Kitchens; his parents, Wiley L. and Birdie Posey Kitchens; four sisters, Glean K. Brown, Irene K. Denson, Alva K. Alexander, and Vera K. Dombhart Brown; and three brothers, Elmer, Lecil, and Furn Kitchens. Survivors include three daughters, seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. As a young man in the early 1930s, Mr. Kitchens attended the Berea College Academy in Berea, Kentucky, where he was awarded the coveted Howard Prize as the most outstanding student. He was ordained a deacon of Five Mile Church in 1943, and for all of his adult life spoke as an advocate of the cause of Christ, striving to be a peacemaker while not compromising on matters of principle. Mr. Kitchens worked through three major careers, first for 14 years as manager of a 3,000 acre ranch south of Greensboro, then for 26 years as owner-operator of a shoe repair and shoe sales store in Greensboro, then for 25 years as owner- operator of a gravel excavation and sales business. As manager of the ranch, raising sheep and cattle, he was exempted from military service due to his role as a supplier of provisions for the wartime economy. He was also a partner in the construction of Lock 7 (Selden Lock & Dam) on the Black Warrior River. Mr. Kitchens was known as a good manager and an innovator; for example, when faced with the task of fencing and cross-fencing 3,000 acres in the early 1940s, he rigged a power post-hole digger from the rear end of an old car. He finally quit work at age 91. As one who was very civic minded, Mr. Kitchens served as a member of the Greensboro Industrial Board, on the Advisory Board of Citizens Bank, and as a founding member of the Hale County Cattlemen's and Sheep Growers' Associations. He loved to encourage young people to strive for their dreams, and was a much- loved and valued friend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Five Mile Primitive Baptist Church Building Fund, 18575 Co. Rd. 32, Akron, AL 35441. Condolences may be offered at www.memorychapelfuneralhome.com.
