This file was contributed and copyrighted by: Christine GrimeThacker ==================================================================== October 2000 Source: Alabama Official and Statistical Register, 1911, page 91-92 Legislative Department, Thirty-fifth District, Henry and Houston Counties, Senator JOHN JOLLY ESPY, of Headland, was born April, 1878, in Henry County, Ala. and is the son of Thomas F. and Frances (Searcy) Espy, and the grandson of Robert and Elizabeth Espy and of James and Achsa Searcy, all of Henry County. Thomas F. Espy was a farmer and teacher; served four years in the War of Succession; and was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1876, and again in 1896. James Searcy was a member of the Alabama Senate in 1853. Senator Espy was educated in the common schools of Henry County; studied law and was admitted to the bar by the Supreme Court of Alabama in 1899; practised law in Dothan from 1900 to 1902 with Espy and Farmer, as Espy, Farmer, and Espy. He then moved to Headland and engaged in the mercantile business; established the First National Bank in Headland, 1904; and he has also been continuously interested in the live stock and the fertilizer business and agricultural pursuits. He served as a councilman of Headland, 1906 to 1908, and as mayor, 1909 and 1910. He is a Democrat; a Baptist, a Mason; and Odd Fellow; a Knight of Pythias; a Woodman of the World; and a Columbian Woodman. He was married Dec 18, 1901 at Ozark, Ala. to Emma Carroll, the daughter of Major and Sarah Carroll. Major Carroll is a member of the House of Representatives from Dale County.
