My Grandnother, Amanda Ann Serena Callaway Brett, died 1-24-1912. I later came into possession of the Bible and family records. (Mrs. Starlus) Elizabeth Brett Williams Rigell Sworn to and subscribed before me this 3rd day of November 1964 Tillie A Heath M COMMISSION EXPIRES SEPT. 5. 1966 BONDED THROUGH FRED W. DIESTLHORST The following statement was written or dictated by my grandmother, Amanda Ann Serena Callaway Brett: (written in pencil on the back of part of a page of a calendar dated July 1895.) "My Grandfather Callaway' s name was Thomas. He was born in Delaware and came from there to Tenn. where he staid some time and then went to Ga. He lived in Lawrence ( Laurens?) County some of the time but came with my father to Jackson County, FLa. in 1824. He married Nancy Hosea by whom he had six sons and four daughters. They were both buried in our family burying ground. I do not know when or where thev were married or when they died. His ancestors were Welsh. My mother's father's name was Elisha Banks. He lived in Ga. and married Mrs. Sarah Holland. Her maiden name was Kirkland. He was waylaid and murdered by a man named Roundtree when my mother was very young. My grandmother had one son by her first husband and three,1 son and 2 daughters by my grandfather. She afterwards married a man named Williams by whom she had 3 or 4 children. She also came to Jackson Co Florida in 1824 but died and was buried at Louisville, Alabama. My mother's family (I don't recollect whether on her father's or mother's side) descended from the Dutch." The following data was written down in pencil by my Auntie (Elizabeth Callaway Brett) John Brett and Esther his wife were married 29th Sept. 1763 Sarah Brett their daughter was born Oct. 2nd 1764 Jesse Brett their son was born Feb. 19th 1767 Martha Brett their daughter was born Oct. 28th 1769 Priscilla Brett their daughter was born Jan. 30th 1775 Martha Brett their daughter was born Feb. 2nd 1778 Frances Brett their daughter born Jan 28th 1781 John Brett their son was born Oct. 22nd 1783 Tabitha Brett wife of Jno Brett died May 5th 1841 John Brett died March 28 1852 Later Aunt Jessie Brett added the following: Evidently Sister wrote this. It looks like her writing, but she says she doesn't remember writing it. She thinks it looks like her writing, however. The first John Brett and Esther Brett must have been Papa' s Grandfather and Grandmother. John Brett born in 1783 was his father, I guess. I know his mother's name was Tabitha. That is where Tattie got her name. Papa and a sister, Elizabeth, who married Mama's brother, Fair Banks Callaway; were the only children of his mother, I think. His mother was his father's second wife. He had a half brother, Jesse Brett. He is buried at the Smith Buring Ground, Smith Plantation near Gordon. I don't think he was married. He (Papa) had a brother, or half brother, I don't know which, accidentally killed when small. There was a corpse in the house and some men were carrying a log of wood for the fire and dropped it on him. Papa's mother was Tabitha Watts before she married. Our grandfather, Elijah Callaway was a Baptist preacher and a surveyor. He was an officer in the war and the feathers on his cap are in that big trunk in the pantry joinging the kitchen and bathroom. There is a book in there also containing some of his notes and drawings in surveying and his will. His Bible is in there too. We have some buttons from his uniform also. I think Mama had one for each child. Mine is in the same trunk as this. "Aunt Jessie" I, Elizabeth Brett Williams Rigell, born October 18, 1884, do hereby sertify tgat the following Family Record is a true copy kept in the old family Biblem published bt N. Bangs and J.
