ALGenWeb File Manager - Lygia Dawkins Cutts ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributed by Jane Nichols ren@HiWAAY.net July 1999 This cemetery is located on hwy. 117 on the left before you get to the Tennessee line. There is a dirt road that goes up through the cemetery. Graves are on both sides of the dirt road. I thought it was two separate cemeteries, but I found out it was all one huge cemetery and very old. There used to be a Mount Gilead Church there many years ago. This is one of the worst grown-up, neglected cemeteries we have been to yet. Mr. Kirk, who lives down the road, said there are some boys knocking the headstones over and destroying them. The first time I went to the cemetery, I had no idea it was as big as it is. Mr. Kirk took us up in the cemetery and showed us the approximate boundaries and where the old Holder homeplace used to be. I had them listed as two separate cemeteries, but am combining them into one. The extra notes are taken from the Annie Coleman Proctor Chronicles at the Scottsboro Public Library. Diane Garner sent me some more headstones I did not have listed, that's when we decided to go back to the cemetery and redo it. There are so many pioneer families buried here, it's a shame to let it be completely destroyed. If anyone is interested in helping us clean this cemetery up this fall, please contact me. There are many more graves in this cemetery, marked with rocks, and some unmarked, and I'm sure more headstones we didn't find because of the condition of the cemetery.
