Univ. of NC, 1857; in law at Univ. of Va.; enlisted in C.S.A. in 1861 as private; elected 2d Lt.; elected Lt.-col. 23d NC regt., May, 1862; wounded twice at Seven Pines; wounded in head at Spotsylvania C.H.; wounded at Gettsburg in 1st day's fighting; promoted from Lt.-col to brig.-gen., C.S.A., after the battle of Gettysburg; participated in all battles of Army of Northern Va.; again wounded at battle of Hare's Hill, nr. Petersburg, Va.; and paroled at Charlotte, NC., April, 1865; m. Greensboro, NC, Nov. 1, 1871, Lizzie Johnston Evans; g.d. Gov. John M. Morehead. Began practice of law at Charlotte, NC; had a large and lucrative practice; moved in 1887 to Birmingham, Ala., as pres. Birmingham Nat. Bank; and engaged in banking; now promoting investments on mineral and other lands. Brother of Joseph F. Johnston, gov. of Ala. Residence: 1721 12th Av., S.
