Hanke OXMOOR CEMETERY This cemetery is located in Jefferson County on the NE corner enclosed by West Oxmoor-Shannon road and the Oxmoor- Wenonah Road. Boy Scouts had cleared the cemetery at one time and had put a sign, but that is gone. There is no identifying marker of any kind. Most of the graves – and there are very many graves there – have no markers left, and are noticeable only because of the neat rows of sunken places. A few others have only sandstone rocks marking them. We found only one of this type that had anything on it, a hand-scratched notation, “May the 4 1877.” Nothing else. The graves that still have markers are on the highest point, and used to be surrounded by brick wall enclosures or wrought-iron fences. Most stones are gone or buried now, the brick walls broken in places, and some of the fences are broken. We copied the inscriptions of the stones we could find, starting at the at the Wenonah Road and working front to back, roughly. Last Name First Name Middle Name Birth Death Comment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gilbert Macon Sept 20, 1897 May 13, 1899 See Rest Below Additional Comments: Macon Gilbert, son of M. & J. Green – Born Sept 20, 1897, Died May 13, 1899 Nearby, a wrought-iron fence, with only a footstone inside: ‘S. G.’ Broken headstone, only partial inscription left, ‘underneath…everlasting…’ and a footstone with ‘J.H.M.’ Could this be John H. Metters – Born 1865, Died 1896? He was listed in an earlier transcription. If so, his stone is gone now. ------------------ Brick wall enclosure, 1 ½ foot high. Inside: (Lamb) Johnnie, son of I. & Mary A Veitch – Born Aug 16, 1877, Died April 6, 1878 ( Masonic Symbol) Isaac Veitch – Born March 18, 1835, Died Dec 25, 1881. ‘A loving husband, a father dear, a faithful friend, He’s buried here.’ Research: Isaac Veitch was a confederate soldier, deserted briefly, went back and fought for duration of war, being captured once. His wife was Mary Parker. Pension was denied to widow, however, because D.C. said desertion was still on his record. Widow fought unsuccessfully to have his name cleared for twenty years. His discharge papers had been lost in a hurricane that hit NC. All this from info online by Ed Veitch. Johnnie was perhaps named for Isaac’s brother John Veitch. His brothers were John Thomas Veitch, Ellis Monroe Veitch, George E. Veitch, and William F. Veitch. A descendant, Ed Veitch, posted info that Isaac died of Alcoholism. (Listed from an earlier transcription in Some Inscriptions from Alabama Cemeteries Vol 2a p 873, but no marker now, in 2005: John R. Veitch, son of H. W. & K. V. But their stones aren’t visible anymore in 2005. To the right of those: Silas Givan – Born 1879, Died Jan 5, 1899. John S., 11 Aug 1844 — 4 Jul 1920 [Delache was a Private in Company B of the 2nd Alabama Cavalry, CSA; 1907 Blount County Confederate Census and Alabama Confederate Pension Applications] Delache, Ella E., wife of J.S. Delache, 24 Sep 1844 — 2 Jul 1911 Delache, Mary Allyne Rhodes, wife of John S. Delache, 5 May 1875 — 31 May 1931 (makes me wonder how Mary was wife of J. S. if she wasn’t even born until 1875. Was she his wife from 1911 until 1920? A 36-year-old woman married to a 67-year-old man?) -------------------- (Large marker with pretty carving of a scroll page surrounded by roses. An ‘X’ at the bottom of the scroll) Mrs. Mary L. Patton – Died Sept 28, 1880. Aged 33 years. (Lamb) Flora Patton – June 29, 1875, Oct 5, 1877. Not evident anymore, but on earlier listing of cemetery: John T. Patton 1846- 1878 If this is one family, it’s kind of sad: baby died a little over 2, dad died next c age 32, and wife died 1 ½ or 2 years later age 33. ---------------------- 2-foot-high brick enclosure with brick cairn in middle. No headstones. Metal pole fence with 3-foot-high pointed concrete pillars on corners and along sides. No markers. Large stone block headstone 2 ½’ x 1’ x1’ and smaller foot block 1’ x 1’ x 1’ May have had writing on it at one time, but we were unable to determine that.
