Hanke lhbham@yahoo.com February 27, 2007, 6:20 pm Abstracted By: L. Hanke There is an abandoned cemetery at the junction of Venice Road and Sydney, off of Lakeshore Drive between Hoover and Bessemer in Jefferson County Alabama. A book at the Linn- Henley research library in Birmingham says it once served the Mt.Olive church in the Wenonah area (once known as Powderly). It also said the graves were relocated when the roads were widened. However, there are many tombstones still standing in the woods, others have fallen, and one is even lying out by the roadside. I hurriedly jotted down some, and plan to go back with chalk. As you can see from the notes below, it is in all probability a black cemetery. Last Name First Name Middle Name Birth Death Comment -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Felder Mary 1840 age 51 Additional Comments: There’s a Mary Felder on the 1920 census, b.f. age 39, married to Will Felder b.m. age 40, daughter Willie M., looks like maybe age 3 and some months? All were b.AL. She’s the only Mary Felder listed in 1920 in Jefferson Co AL. Will was listed as a laborer at the mines. t625 roll 20 page 14 -------------------------- Percy Thomas (didn’t get dates) 1920 has a Percy Thomas, b.m. age 29, widower b.GA. Parents b.SC. However, there’s a Harvy or Harvey Wilson in the 1910 Jonesboro census, b.m. age 17, a boarder in the hh of Wiley Jones, wife Mary, and two daughters Willie Ann 7 and Pearl 4. He was a laborer in the ‘rolling mill.’ ------------------------------ Earnest Moore (Armed Forces tombstone) ‘wagoner’ 1920 has two Earnest Moores: one a b.m. age 24 with wife Lillie, b.f. age 21. He’s a laborer at the furnace. Census taken Jan. 16, 1920. t625 roll 21 page 15. the other a b.m. 45, wife Sarah age 42, have a son - Earnest Jr., age 21 - among other children. Earnest Sr. is a laborer at the steel plant. Census taken Jan. 6, 1920. t625 roll 25 page 114. -------------------------------- William Bell (didn’t get dates) There’s a William Bell in 1920 living near the road to Powderly, which was what the area today at the end of Venice Road was called back in the 1800s. This cemetery is in that area. This William Bell is a b.m. age 51, wife Rena? age 50 - no one else in hh. He is a laborer at the ‘gin cc?’ Both were b. MS. ----------------------------- Broken marker: Hattie Mar_ham(?) b.1891, d. 1927 I can find nothing about her. ---------------------------- Other stones were visible, but I couldn’t get to them easily. The cemetery needs to be recorded before it is completely lost.
