Jefferson County AlArchives Cemeteries.....Wood Family Cemetery - Complete Survey ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Betty Thomas SwissMiss1710@aol.com Location: Across from the original Wood home site on First Avenue. It adjoins the Woodlawn Christian Church on 57th Street between First and Second Avenue North. This is a private cemetery for the Wood family and relatives. It contains two acres. A substantial stonewall surrounds the cemetery. At first the wall was only across the front of the cemetery. Later the family raised funds to continue the wall around the other three sides. At that time iron gate was placed at the entrance of the cemetery. Just inside the cemetery, behind the gate, is a large marker with WOOD engraved on it. In the early days, the cemetery was kept as a lovely garden where the family could enjoy visiting with the deceased family members. Arches of running roses, cedar, elm, and oak trees, walks lined with boxwood, masses of shrubbery and beds of foliage made this cemetery a place of beauty and dignity. It is regrettable that the cemetery is no longer a place of beauty to visit. It is well kept but not like it was years ago. The ground where the cemtery is located was originally patented to James Murray by the US Government in 1822. It was later conveyed by James Murray and his wife to Ballard D. Matthews and then in 1824 to Matthew H. Gillespie, trustee for Malinda Tarrant, wife of Thomas Tarrant. It was bought from Malinda Tarrant by Edmund Wood in 1838, and given to his son, Obadiah Washington Wood, who deeded the lad to the Wood family for a burying ground. The information within brackets [ ] added by Betty Wood Thomas. She has visited this cemetery since she was a small child. She was told about the people buried there and their relation to each other. The cemtery is no longer active. Among the last to be buried there was Dyer Hudson Wood, Mrs. Thomas's father.
