Ray who, being duly sworn, depo seth and saith that when a Private in Company B of 25 Regiment of Ala Volunteers and while in the discharge of his duty on the 22 day of July 1864 at Atlanta in the state of Georgia he lost the use of his left arm; that he was a resident of Alabama on the 28th day of Frbruary, 1889 and is a resident of Alabama on the date of this Application; that he is engaged in the business of farming; and that his taxable property does not exceed four hundred dollars in value. And in consequence of such loss of limb, wound, sickness old age, he is physically unable to earn a livelihood by labor: That his is now a resident of Alabama, and that his post office address is east Birmingham, that he is engaged in the business of nothing, That his taxable property consist of nothing, and is not worth in the aggregate more than five hundred dollars: That his salary or gross income does not amount to five hundred dollars per year ; and that is wife does not own a separate estate of more than five hundred dollars. Porter, Judge of Probate, Jefferson County APPLICATION FOR THE RELIEF OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS State of Alabama Jefferson County The Honorable Board of Pension Examiners for said County: Your petitioner J.W. Ray, respectfully represents to your honorable board that he is a resident citizen of Jefferson County, in the State of Alabama, and that he resided in said state on the first day of January in the year 1899. That he enlisted in the service of the State or Confederate States as a private in Company b, 25 Alabama Regiment on the 9th day of Jan, 1861 at Talladega in the State of Alabama, and that he was honorably discharged from such service on the (blank) day of May 1865, that he did not sesert the service of the Confederate States, or of the State of Alabama; That he was wounded at the battle of Atlanta in the State of GA. That he is now unable to make a living by manual labor on account of Wounds; That he is at the time of filing this application 68 years of age, and that his post office address is Adamsville Alabama; That he does not own property either in his wn name; nor that his Wife, to the value of four hundred ($400) dollars; That his annual income does not exceed four hundred ($400) dollars, and that his has no children upon he can depend for support. Your petitioner filed herewith a complete schedule of all property owned by himself and wife. In consideration of foregoing facts, your petitioner asks that his name be placed upon the pension rolls, in the calss that your honorable board may adjudge him to belong, that he may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of Confederate and Alabama Soldiers and their widows, by act of the General Assembly approved February 10, 1899 Signed J.W. E.J. Oden J.R. Horn, MD Additional Comments: James W. Ray (b) 12 May 1832, South Carolina (d) 16 November 1906, Jefferson Co., AL. He was married to Malinda Caroline Thompson. Both are buried at Midway Cemetery in Adamsville, Jefferson Co., AL. His grave is marked, but there is not much left of the dates and etc., left to read. Malinda’s grave is not marked. Children were : Martha Mahala Robert A. William Thomas Patsy Hattie M. James Lula B. John Jefferson Una C. This family was enumerated in 1860 Fayette Co., AL, 1870 Shelby Co., AL, 1880 Saint Clair Co., AL and 1900 Jefferson Co., AL. James W. Ray is buried at Midway Cemetery in Adamsville, Jefferson Co., AL. He grave is marked, but There is not much left of the dates and etc., left to read.
