For extraordinary heroism in action near Frapelle, France, September 4, 1918. He showed exceptional bravery during an enemy raid. His teammate on an automatic rifle having been mortally wounded, and although he was himself severely wounded, he continued to serve his weapon alone until the raid was driven back.
