For extraordinary heroism in action near Mezy, France, July 15, 1918. After his gun had been destroyed by shell fire Sergt. Mitchell led his men through the enemy lines to our own. He braved the extreme shelling and machine-gun fire by going to the aid of the wounded, and while withdrawing covered the retreat, effectively holding off the enemy.
