Distinguished Service Cross Citation
  Ansley Smith, sergeant, Company C, 16th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in
action near Soissons, France, July 18, 1918. Severely wounded early in the
morning, he refused to relinquish command of his platoon, but led its attack to
its final objective, remaining in command until after nightfall, when he was
ordered to an aid station.  Residence at enlistment: Danville, Ala.
