Bruner, Army Serial Number 20467691, who died on September 7, 1943, while serving his county in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. Sergeant Bruner, of Battery A, 104th Coast Artillery Battalion (AA), was accidentally killed at Goodenough Island. He was making a trinket out of a .50 caliber shell, which had the slug and powder removed, when the primer exploded upon application of a torch, driving a small splinter of the shell into his heart and causing almost instantaneous death.
