Thomas Semmes Forbes, 71, a resident of Birmingham before he entered the Episcopal ministry, died Saturday morning at Accomac, Va., where, until January of this year, he was rector of St. James Church. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery in this city. The Rev. John Turner, rector of the Church of the Advent, will officiate. Johns-Service will be in charge. The Rev. Mr. Forbes was born at Warrenton, Va., the son of John Murray Forbes, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Mary Elizabeth Seemes, of Alexandria, Va. He was educated at Hampton Sidney College in Virginia and came to Birmingham in the early eighties where he was engaged in the building material and life insurance business. He was connected with the Union Central Life Insurance Company for a number of years. In 1914, he was called to Virginia to serve as an army chaplain of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and after the war he entered the ministry. He was rector of St. James Church of Accomac until his retirement early this year because of ill health. His first wife was Miss Lottie Shepard, daughter of Col. A. K. Shepard, one of the pioneers of Birmingham. Surviving are the widow, the former Mayme Hooke, of Chattanooga; a daughter, Mrs. Roy Smith, of Washington, D. C.; two grandsons and a number of nephews and nieces, including Carl P. Wittichen and Mrs. Pauline W. Gilliam, of Birmingham; Mrs. George H. Dunlap, of Mobile; F. O. Wittichen, of Memphis; W. F. Wittichen, of Coral Gables, Fla., and G. M. Wittichen, of Calgary, Canada.” On the same page, column 8: “Forbes – Rev. Thomas Semmes Forbes, age 81, passed away in Accomac, Va., Saturday. Survived by his wife Mayme Hooke Forbes; 1 daughter, Mrs. Roy (Mary) Smith, 2 grandsons, nephew Carl F. Wittichen, B’ham; niece Mrs. Paulline W. Gilliam, B’ham, and other relatives.
