Hanke lhbham@yahoo.com July 16, 2008, 7:12 pm Source: Jefferson Co Probate Court, Loose Records Written: July 19, 1915 Fanne Cahn Fies, died 25 Oct 1916 The following information comes directly from her will: Born 28 Mar 1846 in Schierhoffen, Alsace Lorraine. Father: Hassel Cahn. Mother: Martle Gottschalk. Sons: Marx (Maxie) Fies md. Hannah - their dau: Aline Eugene Fies md. Gabriella (Gabe) - their ch: Attel (dau) and Gene Louis (son) Ralph Fies md. Leona - their dau: Frances Milton md. Rosie Irving md. Hazel Hiller - their son: Jacob (Jack) Hazel's brother, Sidney Hiller was guardian for Jacob after Irving died 21 Jan 1917. Only Dau: (I'll have to check records again - I neglected to write it down) her dau: Mildred Fanne Fies' will was written and signed 19 July 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin for some reason, but it states that she resided in Birmingham, Alabama. The will distributed Fanne's possessions thusly: Hazel, wife of Irving, would get her set of furs. Leona, wife of Ralph, would get the Persian Lamb fur coat. Her daughter (I have to check for her name) would get all of her wearing apparel. If her daughter didn't want her wearing apparel, it was to be divided among the poor people of Birmingham. Ralph and Leona would get the picture of Fanne and her late husband (Jake Fies) which, at the time, hung in her den. Frances, daughter of Ralph and Leona, would get her watch and bracelet. Attel, daughter of Eugene and Gabe, would get her cameo pin. Aline, daughter of Maxie, would get her chain and lorgnette. Gene, son of Eugene, would get the silver cup which once belonged to Fanne's father. Milton and Rosie would get her pearl ring. Eugene would get her wedding ring, with the request that he wear it. Both rings, at the time, she wore on her right hand. Ralph, Milton, and Irving would get all the silverware not specifically bequeathed elsewhere. All five sons would get the chinaware, not specifically bequeathed elsewhere. Jack, son of Irving, would get her wardrobe trunk. Otherwise, she instructed that the $1,000 she received from B'nai Brith Lodge #7 be given to her Executor to be distributed as follows: $250 to the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati, Ohio. $150 to the Old People's Home of New Orleans, Louisiana. $600 to local charities in Birmingham, Alabama, as selected by the Executor. She instructed that the heirs provide for and take care of Lucinda, her servant of 30 years, "so that she may not need during her lifetime." She wanted the firm name of Fies & Sons to be kept "perpetually." Milton and Rosie were to select two trees to be planted at Dr. Crosscup's Farm School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in memory of Fanne and her late husband. Her youngest son, Irving, would get the real estate and house at 2316 Highland Avenue, as well as the entire contents, not heretofore bequeathed. She went on to explain that Irving got a larger portion because the other sons already received property and interests from their late father. Maxie and Eugene had received the lots where their homes had been built. Ralph had received 5 shares of stock in his father's business. Milton had received approximately $7,000 expended on his college education. Maxie was named Executor, and if he could not serve as such, Eugene was to be named. Additional Comments: The odd thing is, Eugene isn't mentioned again after this will of 1915. He is not on the list of heirs named by Maxie on the Petition of Probate Will, around 1919 - only Max, Ralph, Milton, the daughter, and Irving's son Jacob. Eugene was listed on the 1920 census, so he hadn't died. I don't know why his family wasn't represented on the Petition to Probate Will. Fannie was married before she married Mr. Fies. Her daugher, Mathilde, was born to this first marriage. Mathilde married Sidney Klotz. Daughter Mildred was born in 1915.
