BARKSDALE, Secretary LIMITED PARTNERSHIP The undersigned, residing in the town of Vernon, have this the 21st day of March 1888, in pursuance of the provisions in the Code of Alabama, formed a limited partnership or the transaction of a newspaper publishing and general job printing business in the town of Vernon, Ala. R. J. YOUNG is the general partner, and MOLLIE C. YOUNG is the special partner; the latter having contributed to the common stock of the firm the sum of $266.00. The business will be transacted under the name of the Courier Publishing Company. Said partnership commences on this 21st day of March 1888, and is to continue for a term of six years. R. J. Given under my hand at office, this 21st day of March 1888. W. A. YOUNG, Judge of Probate Not a marriage license was issued last week. Miss EMMA YOUNG visited relatives in town this week. Mr. J. S. ROBERTSON of Columbus spent this week in town. Col. S. M. MEEK of Columbus is attending the court here this week. The Athletes and College Nine will cross bats Saturday evening. Everybody invited to witness the game. There is some talk of organizing a Military Company in our town. If you want to join inform the Courier that you will do so. The Methodist keep lent the first week in April. The Vernon Circuit will observe the first week in April as a week of prayer and self denial. The Rev. G. L. HEWITT filled the pulpit of the Methodist Church as usual Sunday, and delivered an excellent sermon on the “Responsibilities of Man.” There will be preaching at the Methodist Church next Wednesday night. Everyone is expected to contribute something as self denial on that occasion. Tax Collector LACY announces himself a candidate for re-election in this issue. Mr. LACY has filled several important official positions and his record as an officer is certainly good. Editor MCNATT of the Pratt Mines Advertiser was in town several days in the first of the week. He says that Vernon is one of the most pleasant places to live in the State. Mr. PHILLIP WOODS announces himself a candidate for the office of County Treasurer this week. No man in Lamar County stands higher before the public as a high tones Christian gentleman. He is also well qualified to fill the office. Several of the boys are wanting our space to announce themselves for Beat offices. Just so soon as we learn that all the candidates for county offices have announced we will give you space. We intend to enlarge the Courier at an early day so as to give space to every candidate for Commissioner, Justice and Constable in the county. The fines and forfeitures at the present term of the Circuit Court amounts to $324. Fines being assessed in 33 cases. On Friday evening last quite a number of our young gentleman and ladies went up to Shiloh to attend the closing exercises of the school at that place, of which Prof. G. W. YOUNG is principal. The party reached their destination about 4 o’clock p.m. which was too late for the exercises of the day, but with the assurance of being well entertained during the evening, spent the time very pleasantly until the twilight hour few near, when the rush for seats began. The crowd was immense, and it was with much difficulty seats were procured. About 7 p.m. the curtain rose, and the audience was entertained for several hours with recitations, speeches and dialogues. At the hour of mid-night, the parties were on their way to Vernon, and the evening was unanimously voted, pleasantly spent. HOPPER a candidate for the office of Sheriff at the August election, 1888. LOCALS A severe gale Sunday night. Circuit Court adjourned Thursday State tickets rated very low this week. The trial of THOS. B. BEARD for murder was continued. Judge SPROTT and Solicitor SMITH left for Livingston yesterday. The case of GEORGE TAYLOR for mayhem was reduced to assault and battery. B. M. BUIE of the Courier is off on a visit to relatives in Virginia this week. No mail was sent out or received over the Columbus route Monday or Tuesday. The grand Jury made their final report Thursday morning, 45 indictments were returned. The high waters have destroyed quite a number of bridges throughout the county. Most all the candidates were in town this week and were very glad to meet their friends. There is considerable discussion as to the propriety of two weeks court for this county. The road bed of the Kansas City was washed up in several places during the recent overflow. Many people remained in town during the week not being able to cross the water courses. Several storms have passed through the eastern part of the state during the past two weeks. The State Treasurer of Kentucky, James W. Tate, has defaulted for $250,000. He had been Treasurer for 20 years. There were 72 cases on the docket for this week. Quite a number of them were continued on account of high water. Mr. JACK HOPPER another capable and worthy young man announces himself a candidate for the office of Sheriff this week. Messrs. CHISM & SOUTH were taken up on charge of violating the revenue law. They paid their license and were discharged. Married - At the residence of the bride’s father on the 28th inst., Mr. D. V. MCNEES and Miss M. J. HOPPER. Rev. M. E. VAIL officiating. Two convictions for felony at the present term. HULDA GILMORE sentenced to hard labor for twelve months. ED. TIMMONS, sentenced to the Penitentiary for 4 years. In this issue appears the announcement of J. E. PENNINGTON’S for the office of Tax Collector. Mr. PENNINGTON has been much in public life having been Tax Assessor for many years. He is a man who could and would fill the office properly if elected. The young men of jasper have organized a “leap year protective club.” The purpose of the organization is to protect the young men from leap year proposals. At a recent leap year ball in that place a young lady proposed to almost every young man that attended the ball.
