The benefits derived from the use of the fruit as an article of diet are generally understood, but an English medical journal calls renewed attention to the matter………….. Three hundred miles an hour is the proposed speed for the electric postal railroad of the future. An experimental line has been erected at Laurel, twenty miles from Baltimore…………. ALIENATED AFFECTION New York, Oct. 21 – Col. Ingersoll, Gen. Prior, and Gen. McMahon are about to begin suit, on behalf of Mrs. James. G. Blaine, Jr. against James G. Blaine, Sr. and wife ……………. The annual conference of the North Alabama Conference will convene at Anniston, on the 14th of November. Ex-Treasurer J. P. Beard of Marshal County was a defaulter, and his bondsmen have compromised his indebtedness by paying the county $1,000. Howe’s New London circus with Lalla Rookh, the oldest and best performing elephant, (110 years old) in America will be at Sulligent, Monday October 29th. A new mail route has been established from this place to Steenston, on the G. P. R. R. 21 miles south of this place. Three new offices have been established: Berly, with BURLEY HOOTS as postmaster; Star, J. F. HAYES, postmaster, and Richards, F. M. RICHARDS, postmaster. The Courier expects a number of new subscribers from each of these new offices. Howe’s New London circus which was advertised to be at Sulligent, some time ago, but was stopped by quarantine, will be at Sulligent without fail open the 29th day of October . Don’t fail to see it. THE SWEETEST EYES – (poem) A CARD Having been informed that it has been circulated in portions of this county that Dr. J. S. STANLEY asked me to get a bill through the legislature to prohibit females practicing midwifery, or to require them to secure a license to practice. This is unjust to Dr. STALNEY, and I feel it my duty as well as my good pleasure to say to the public that Dr. STANLEY never asked or intimated such a thing. Respectfully R. L. MCCLUSKEY has just returned from Fayette Court house where he has been for the past few days engaged in some important litigation in the Chancery Court Sheriff METCALFE left for Carrollton, Ala. Tuesday, after JACOB HARRIS, who is in jail at that place, and is wanted in this county to answer the charge of assault with intent to rape. We will announce a cash prize next week to be given to the person who sends us the largest list of subscribers before the first of January, 1889. This is a rare chance to make money. Hon. Edward DeGraffenried, delivered an eloquent speech on the political issues of the day at the court house on last Saturday. The speech was about three- quarters of an hour in length. The Kansas City Fort Scott & Memphis R. R. Co has issued and now ready for distribution to its patrons an elegant wall map of that Company’s entire system. As the maps are too large for mailing and too expensive for indiscriminate distribution, they will be distributed only through the General Ticket office and the company’s local agents. Agents are now prepared to deliver the maps when called upon for them. Nobody ought to want a better collection of stories than is found in Godey’s Lady’s Book for November……….. The friends of JOHN AND JEFF. SMITH were in town Monday seeing what could be done towards securing their release, but while they were seeing what they could do, Mr. HAYLEY, agent for the T. C. I & Railroad Company arrived in town as soon had them dressed for a trip to Pratt Miens, and left for that place with them in charge. Their friends paid up the cost in all the case which leaves them to work out only the penalties which is, JOHN 115 days and JEFF. 155 days. $100 given away to our subscribers. The Fall term opens Monday, October 1st 1888. The Spring Term Opens Monday February 3rd 1889. Course of Study. The course o study is divided into three grades. The Primary, The Intermediate, and the Senior. Literary Department – Prof. HOOD and Associates – This department comprehends the usual course of study in Institutes of this character. The object in this department will be either to prepare young men and ladies for a University course or fit them for business avocations by a thorough college course. Music –This department will have as principal a graduate in music. A lady who is up in the latest methods of teaching. Normal Department – The principal being a graduate of one of the finest Normal Colleges in the south, will conduct this department, and will instruct those who enter it in the latest and best methods of successful teaching. Art – The instruction in this department will be by a thorough and finished instructor Calisthenics – This is intended as a healthful and beneficial physical training for young ladies Military – Capt. J. S. EACHINS, Instructor – It is the purpose of the principal in introducing military exercises in the course of the college to furnish a diversion as well as a beneficial physical training for his male pupils. This feature, however, is optional with pupil. The instructor ha been connected with the State troops for the past eight years, and was a student of the University of Alabama for four years. Boarding Department – this department will be directly under the supervision of the principal. Young ladies who enter school will be under the supervision of the matron.
