YOUNG, Manager YES SHE DID – (page torn) January the 4th, 1889 Mr. JASON GUIN is spending a few days at home. Constable O. F. HALEY is adding a new front to his dwelling. Mr. WILL GUIN of Townley spent a few days in town last week. Wanted. A load of cotton seed. Apply at this office. Mr. JAS. SISSON of Fern bank was in town the first of the week. Next Monday will be Commissioner’s Court and County Court. Mr. W. B. SPANN of Columbus is circulating among friends in town this week. The Institute opened Monday with a larger attendance than ever before. The post office is now occupying the building formerly occupied by J. & W. G. MIDDLETON. Ye editor returned Saturday last from a very pleasant visit to the eastern part of the state. The first Quarterly Conference for the Vernon Circuit meets at the church in town tomorrow. Rev. L. M. WIMBERLY was re-elected mayor of Vernon without opposition on the 31st ult. A good photographer could make it pay handsomely by locating in Vernon for a short time. Mr. and Mrs. DAVID RECTOR of Columbus spent the first of the week with relatives in town----- During the year ending December 31st, 1888, 128 marriage licenses were issued by Judge Young. Quite a number of our friends were present Tuesday at our distribution of New Year presents. Messrs. PITT and MORRIS returned to town the first of the week, and have opened up business again. A list of the persons receiving presents at the drawing will be found in our columns this week. Mr. ALONZO GUIN has purchased the store and stock of goods of Mr. HUGH PENNINGTON, and will engage in the mercantile business. Prof. O. R. HOOD arrived home Saturday and we regret to say, was as unlucky as ye scribe, returning without the madam. NOTICE. Canned ---- specialty. ALONZO L. GUIN, Jan. 4, 1889 (PAGE TORN – LARGE GAP) NOTICE Notice is herby given that a bill will be introduced in the Legislature for the relief of S. F. PENNINGTON, Sheriff of Lamar County, Dec. 28, 1888. We received during our absence last we --- a call to duty in the U. S. Internal Revenue Service, but feeling under obligation to the patrons of the Courier, we decided to stay with the Courier instead of responding to the call of the Department. We shall continue to send our readers the Courier regularly each week only endeavoring to send a better paper each succeeding week. An Arkansas exchange gives account of the marriage of J. W. GOODSON to a lady supposed to be the one with whom he eloped a few days ago. GOODSON left a wife and nine small children in almost destitute circumstances. Subscriptions for their relief were circulated here last week, and about fifty dollars obtained. The next subscription should be to send for GOODSON and to give him the full benefits of the law for his waywardness………. A very sad accident occurred at Sulligent on last Friday night. A party of young had been out in the country to a social gathering, and were returning to town in a wagon. Among the party were DR. and Mrs. D. D. HOLLIS, and while going down a slight incline a wheel struck a small stump, throwing Mrs. HOLLIS out of the wagon, killing her instantly. The bereaved husband and family have the sympathy of the entire community. GUARDIAN’S SALE The State of Alabama, Lamar County Under and by virtue of two separate orders of the Probate Court of said county, made on the second day of January 1889, authorizing and empowering the undersigned J. C. MADDOX, guardian of IDA J. BAILEY and C. D. THE VERNON INSTITUTE, Vernon, Lamar County, Alabama. An English, Classical and Mathematical College for the Education of both sexes. The session is divided into two terms of five months each. The Fall term opens Monday, October 1st 1888. The Spring Term Opens Monday February 3rd 1889. Course of Study. The course o study is divided into three grades. The Primary, The Intermediate, and the Senior. Literary Department – Prof. HOOD and Associates – This department comprehends the usual course of study in Institutes of this character. The object in this department will be either to prepare young men and ladies for a University course or fit them for business avocations by a thorough college course. Music –This department will have as principal a graduate in music. A lady who is up in the latest methods of teaching. Normal Department – The principal being a graduate of one of the finest Normal Colleges in the south, will conduct this department, and will instruct those who enter it in the latest and best methods of successful teaching. Art – The instruction in this department will be by a thorough and finished instructor Calisthenics – This is intended as a healthful and beneficial physical training for young ladies Military – Capt. J. S. EACHINS, Instructor – It is the purpose of the principal in introducing military exercises in the course of the college to furnish a diversion as well as a beneficial physical training for his male pupils. This feature, however, is optional with pupil. The instructor ha been connected with the State troops for the past eight years, and was a student of the University of Alabama for four years. Boarding Department – this department will be directly under the supervision of the principal. Young ladies who enter school will be under the supervision of the matron.
