She was born about April of 1842 in Upson County, Georgia. Her parents have yet to be determined. She was married to Matthew T. Garrett in Upson County in 1855. She and Matthew moved to Chambers County, Alabama and were living there in 1860. War came to the south and to Alabama in 1861. Her husband entered the Confederate Army with the 37th Alabama Infantry. He was in the fighting near Corinth in Mississippi and was at the seige of Vicksburg. He was a POW after the fall of Vicksburg and was paroled. Matthew came back to Alabama and rejoined his unit and was in the fighting at Chattanooga. His regiment surrendered at Durham Station in North Carolina. After the war ended and Matthew came home the family resumed their lives as much as possible. Matthew returned to farming and by 1870 he and Nancy were living at Berlin and Chambers Courthouse in Chambers County, Alabama. By 1880 Nancy and her family lived at Bluffton, now known as Lanett, in Chambers County. By 1900 She and her family had moved and were living in Ridge Grove Precinct and Gold Hill village in Lee County, Alabama. Her husband died in 1903 and was buried at Farmville in Lee County. Nancy filed for a pension as a widow of a Confederate Veteran. She continued to receive a pension until after 1908. She was listed as dead on the January 1909 register. She was listed receiving pension in 1908. Census records for 1900 indicate date of birth April 1842 Nancy and Matthew had 13 children. The 1900 census indicated that 10 of her children were living as of June that year. Additional Comments: Her place of burial and exact date of death have not yet been determined.
