George was married in April of 1860 to the very young, Ann Jane Weaver in Russell County, Alabama. George and Ann lived near his parents in the Northern Division of Russell County, Opelika Post Office. War came to the south and to Alabama the next year. George and his brother in law Thomas J. Weaver joined the 45th Alabama Infantry in Company B, The Dixie Sledge Guards. They both went off to war leaving wives and other family. The 45th was at the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky and then wnt to Murphreesboro. George was with his regiment at the Battle of Stone's River in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in the heaviest part of the fighting at the Slaughter Pen. His regiment was afterwards in the Tullahoma Campaign. The 45th Alabama was at Wartrace, Tennessee during this time. The 45th was in General Patrick Cleburne's Division. Later the 45th saw action in the fighting at Atlanta. The brother in law of George, Thomas Weaver was captured at Dallas, Georgia and remained a POW until the end of the war. The 45th was later at the Battle of Franklin where General Cleburne fell in battle. George survived battle and returned home after the war to his family. He continued on life as a farmer providing for his large family. They endured life during the Reconstruction period. In December of 1866 a new county was created giving honor to General Lee. Lee County was made from portions of Chambers, Russell, and Tallapoosa. The area where the Watsons lived was now in Lee County, Alabama. In 1879 George purchased 100 acres of land, the east end of Section 34, Township 20 and Range 25 in Lee County. George and his family lived in Ridgegrove in Lee County. George and Ann had ten children. He was a prominent citizen in this area of Lee County. In 1896 he became involved in a dispute with one of his neighbors that resulted in gunfire being exchanged and he was mortally wounded. He died on the 16th of May and was buried at Farmville Church Cemetery in Lee County. One of George's daughters, Susan, married Thomas E. Garrett son of Matthew T. Garrett. This daughter, her husband and her father in law are also buried at Farmville Cemetery. Matthew Garrett was also a Confederate Veteran. Additional Comments: When George and Ann were married Ann was young. Her father had died and she had a guardian. Her guardian was John W. Deloach. He was some relation to Ann since her parents were Henry Weaver and Permelia Deloach. John W. Deloach was also in the 45th Alabama with George and Thomas. He was Sgt in the same company.
