Adams johms@bellsouth.net October 14, 2008, 11:12 pm Abstracted By: John H. Adams The Ross Cemetery, an African American cemetery that consists of about four acres of mature forest, is located in a residential area on the north side of Opelika, Alabama, between India Road and Oak Bowery Road. It lies between residences located at 1414 and 1700 India Road, and between 1605 and 1703 Oak Bowery Road. To reach the cemetery from downtown Opelika, take 10th Street north, which becomes Oak Bowery Road. Turn right at the first yellow blinking signal (Northgate Drive), go one block and turn right onto India Road. The cemetery will be on your right. The cemetery is on land once known as the Isaac Ross Plantation. The land stayed in the Ross family from 1839 to 1905. Current ownership of the cemetery is unclear and it is not formally maintained. Kind neighbors voluntarily tend to the area somewhat. The cemetery is fairly easy to walk because it is in a mature forest. Sturdy clothing and shoes are recommended. Some paths cross the cemetery but have no relation to any of the graves. There is no consistent orientation of the graves. About three-dozen grave-sized depressions are scattered throughout the forest, a few marked with natural stones. About twenty unmarked concrete grave caps are also scattered in the area. The identified graves are distributed widely throughout the cemetery. Guidance is provided in this listing under "Additional Comments."
