Distinguished Service Cross Citation
  Charles F. Williams, second lieutenant, 9th Machine Gun Battalion. For
extraordinary heroism in action near Romagne, France, October 11, 1918. Although
wounded by a high-explosive shell, Lieut. Williams refused to be evacuated, but
continued leading his platoon in the attack and successfully defended his
positions from counterattack until completely exhausted. Residence at
appointment: Phoenix City, Ala.
