Lawrence Ripley Davis is a native and resident of Limestone.  He was born in 
1823, was well educated, and is a planter.  In 1849 he represented the county, 
and again in ’59.  He is a man of stalwart appearance, a ready speaker, and a 
forcible writer.  In all the qualities of manhood he partakes of the 
characteristics of his family:  manly, fearless, impulsive, hospitable, &c.  He 
first married a daughter of Hon. James Abercrombie of Russell, and secondly, a 
daughter of Hon. T. J. McClellan of this county.

Was a son of Nicholas Davis and Martha Hargrove.  He married first Mary 
Abercrombie and second Sarah Ann McClellan.  Per the 1880 Census, Limestone 
County, Lawrence Ripley was living with his wife, Sarah, age 38, born in TN, 
and the following children all born in AL:

Martha E., age 26
Jane B., age 22
Melvina, age 20
Susan R., age 17
Willametta, age 16
Bessie, age 13
Annie, age 12
Tommie (a female), age 8
L. Ripley (a male), age 3

The 1870 US Census shows Lawrence and wife Sarah, age 29, with children Rosie, 
age 19, Jane, age 16, 

In 1860 Lawrence was living with Dewitt Clinton Davis, his brother, in Madison 
County with his daughters Martha E, age 8, Jane B, age 6, and Mal (Melvina), 
age 3.  From this it is likely that Martha, Jane and Melvina were the daughters 
of Lawrance and Mary Abercrombie Davis.
