Pettus passed his earlier years in this county, but was born in Wilson County, Tennessee, in 1813, while his parents resided in Madison County – his mother being on a visit to her parents, and his father serving in the Creek War. In early manhood he removed to Sumter County, where he practiced law a short time, then became a planter in Kemper County, Mississippi. He was governor of that State from 1859 to 1863, and died in Arkansas in 1867, leaving to Alabama the memory of a noble son, and to Mississippi that of a faithful public servant. John Jones Pettus served a partial term as govenor of Mississippi from January 5, 1854 to January 10, 1854 after Govenor Henry S. Foote resigned. John was later elected to his own term from November 21, 1859 to November 16, 1863. He died in Pulaski County, Arkansas as a fugitive as amnisty was refused him after the Civil War. The hunt for him continued until his death. He was originally buried in a family or private cemetery and later moved to Flat Bayou Burial Ground near Wabbaseka, Jefferson County, Arkansas.
