I will be glad to provide digital photographs of specific tombstones or of the cemetery to anyone who requests them. Directions to Hatchett Cemetery: Hatchett Cemetery is located off of highway 251 between Athens and Ardmore. It can be reached from Interstate 65 by taking Exit 361 which is called the Elkmont Exit. Head East from the Interstate on Thach Rd. You will cross a railroad track in the first half mile. You will come to Highway 251 in about 5 miles. There will be a stop sign. Go straight across Highway 251 and proceed for about a mile and the road will curve to the right (south). At the curve, there will be a small cement bridge going diagonally to the left . Take the bridge and turn to the right on the other side. That is the road to the cemetery and it is called Liberty Way. Follow the road around a curve to the left and up a hill to the cemetery entrance. The cemetery is on the left at the top of the hill. You can see it after you cross the bridge. The GPS Coordinates are: 34 55.122 North, 86 47.950 West, 811 Elevation. Description Hatchett Cemetery is very active as a gathering place for local extended families. Important events like Mother's day or Veteran's day draw many visitors to dress and decorate the grounds and graves. There are about 240 graves in the plot which covers about an acre. Seven of the grave markers are broken off at the base with no inscription evident. The cemetery sits in a large open cultivated field, is surrounded by chain link fence, and has an overarching wrought-iron gateway that spells out Hatchett Cemetery. There are about a dozen mature trees within the grounds. About half of the total area is still unused. There is an old two story country house sitting across the road from the cemetery entrance. It is about 80 years old and was originally lived in by the Ferguson family. It was then occupied by the Haneys, the Poseys, the Colwells, and the Stubblefields. The new owners are performing a major refurbishment on the house interior while preserving the exterior look. Features The cemetery was estblished before the Civil War with the oldest readable tombstone being placed in 1860. The cemetery is the final resting place for a Confederate Veteran and a former slave. The most abundant names here are Hatchett, Colwell, Newby, Ferguson, Fogg, Williamson, and Buckner. Transcriptions Tombstone transcriptions are recorded line for line as they appear on the grave markers. Multiple names on a headstone are shown side by side on the transcription.
