Horton wphor@sbcglobal.net February 16, 2005, 12:41 pm THE ATHENS POST From THE ATHENS POST (Athens, Limestone Co, AL) - October 3, 1873: A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT. "News was received in this place on Saturday that two men had been found dead in a well near Jones Lane. As is usually the case several rumors as to the cause of the accident, were rife, but it seems from the latest information we could gather, that a white man by the name of RAINES, and a negro man named ED LANE, were down in the well and had been drilling a hole in a rock, in which they placed powder for the purpose of blasting. "The steel drill, it seems, was used in closing the aperture, and which struck fire against the rock and caused a premature explosion, no doubt killing both instantly, as they were found dead in the well, a short time after. The neck of ED LANE, it is stated was broken."
