Horton wphor@sbcglobal.net February 16, 2005, 12:48 pm THE ATHENS POST - November 20, 1874 From THE ATHENS POST (Athens, Limestone Co, AL) - Friday, November 20, 1874 DEATH OF WILSON S. McKINNEY This old and well known citizen, was drowned in Elk River, the latter part of last week. He, and Mr. WASH COLLIER, were crossing the river in an ox wagon and got into swimming water when the wagon became uncoupled and Mr. McKINNEY being in the rear part of the wagon bed was washed off and drowned. Mr. COLLIER who managed to reach the shore, made a very narrow escape. It was impossible for Mr. COLLIER to render any assistance to Mr. McKINNEY, in the swift running water. The body of Mr. McKINNEY, (at this writing) has not been recovered, though every effort is being made to find it. WILSON McKINNEY was near or quite eighty years of age, was very feeble and afflicted with palsy. Such a termination to a long and eventful life, away from home and friends, is truly sad.
