He was born at Athens, Georgia, in 1825, of very respectable parents. His education was thorough, having been completed at Emory College. At one of the primary schools which he attended, the tutor was Mr. Lyman Trumbull, now the distinguished statesman in Illinois. He read law at Greenville, Georgia, and in 1847 came to Alabama and became the principal of a female academy at Hayneville. He taught for several years, then engaged in planting. For several years he was the county superintendent of education. In 1860 he was on the electoral ticket of Bell and Everett, and entered the service of his country as captain of a company in the 45th Alabama Infantry of which he became major. He shared the fortunes of that regiment till disabled by the loss of a leg at Atlanta, July 22, 1864. He represented the county in the constitutional convention of 1865, and in November of that year was elected to the federal congress without opposition. He was no permitted to take his seat for political reasons. He died at Hayneville, July 15, 1866, of an abcess caused by the use of crutches, thus adding another to the list of noble dead of that memorable war. Major Freeman was of a gentle nature, and suave manner, firm in his convictions, lofty in his aims; imbued with moral courage, and a high sense of honor. He married Mrs. Brown of Montgomery, who, with his two children, reside in Lowndes. Additional Comments: George is buried in the Mushat - Gilchrist Cemetery, Hayneville, Lowndes County, Alabama. Military Service Records, Co. I, 45th Regt, AL, Inf, CSA MR., April 2, 1862: Age 28; Enlisted March 13, 1862, at Fort Deposit; enlisted by James Clements. Promoted May 19, 1862, to Captain of Company I; furlough January 7, 1863, for 30 days. Wounded and sent to hospital July 22, 1864-- reported September 14, 1864, near Jonesboro, Georgia. Paroled June 13, 1865. Description: 5'11"; dark complexion; black hair; blue eyes. George and Miranda D. Freeman had at least two children: Charles Paul Freeman, b. October 25, 1862, d. November 29, 1918, buried in the Mushat-Gilchrist Cemetery, Hayeville, Lowndes County, Alabama Eve Freeman, b. May 12, 1866, d. March 29, 1954, Columbus, Georgia. Eva married Caswell William Garrett on December 08, 1891 in Lowndes County. They had at least six children: Infant, born November 10, 1892 Georgia Freeman Garrett, born about 1893 Mary Garrett, born July 08, 1895, d. December 29, 1985 Pauline Garrett, b. September 1897 Eva Garrett, born about 1902 Nancy Garrett, born about 1903. Miranda D. Freeman, George's widow, married George S. Cox in Lowndes County on October 11, 1874.
