The main portion of the cemetery is marked by a twentieth-century iron fence which encloses an area of about forty feet by seventy feet. Inside this fence are marked graves, unmarked graves, and broken markers which were at some point stacked up in a corner of the fenced area. Immediately outside the fence on the south side are fragments of many broken markers which originally stood both inside the fence and outside. Farther to the south are markers which are currently in a small thicket of trees and brambles. Even farther southeast are the remains of two or more graves and broken markers in another clump of trees. The fenced area is probably about one-fourth of the original area of the cemetery. Mr. David Lyon related the following story in 2002: During the lifetime of his father-in-law Edwin Mealing, a farmhand called "Cuz" used the fenced portion of the cemetery as a holding pen for two cows. He did this to seperate the cows from their calves in order to increase milk production for the Mealings. The cows grazed in the cemetery and rubbed themselves against the markers. This is what damaged many markers inside the fence. Those outside the fence were destroyed by falling trees. Rosa Lyon Traylor attributed the destruction of markers to the same tornado of 1908 which destroyed the Mount Gilead meeting house. Other residents of the community residents have accused Ed Mealing of destroying markers outside the fence in order to increase the amount of land put into cultivation. The following list contains the transcriptions of the markers which were accessible on September 20, 2003. It begins with the markers inside the fenced area, reading the markers south to north, in rows which are numbered west to east, and within the rows, south to north. Following that are transcriptions of the broken markers within the fence, without the fence, and under the trees. Following these are graves which appeared in another survey of the cemetery which was made by Rosa Lyon Traylor in the 1930s, as well as the names of others known to be buried at Mount Gilead, but are without markers. Francis was at the funeral and burial for her grandmother. Also, according to Francis, there were, at one time, markers for Jessey Carey May, John Browning May, and William Smith May who were her great-uncles. Martha Owen DeJarnette Robinson Wife of Cornelius Robinson, Sr. b. Oct. 22, 1812, Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC d. March 26, 1896, Birmingham, AL Jessey Carey May son of Rev. William Smith May, Sr. John Browning May son of Rev. William Smith May, Sr. William Smith May, Jr. son of Rev. William Smith May, Sr. It is suspected that Henry H. Bostwick and Ann Hickson Bostwick are buried in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery as Ann is found in the church records as an early member. Henry was born September 15, 1778 in Kingstree, Williamsburg District, SC and died December 25, 1825. The book "Bostwick Genealogy" by Henry Anthon Bostwick, published in 1901, states that Henry died in Mobile. His will, however, was written and posted in the Montgomery County court. Because Lowndes County was still part of Montgomery County at that time, his proberty would have been probated in Montgomery courts. Henry did own property in Mobile, so it is possible he died there. A letter written to family in Williamsburg District, SC by William Worrell Britton states Henry's death was caused by pluracy. Ann was left to raise their children in what became Lowndes County and was active in the community. It is possible she and Henry are buried at Mt. Gilead with their daughter (Margaret Eliza Bostwick Browning) and some of their grandchildren. by Carolyn Golowka
