Letter to Mrs. Neil (Cornelius) Robinson Wallace, of Birmingham, Alabama
from her grandmother, Martha Owen De Jarnette Robinson, widow of Cornelius Robinson

Mrs. Neil Robinson Wallace was Cornelius Robinson, daughter of John William
Robinson and his wife, Mary LaFayette May Robinson.  Neil was named for her 
grandfather, Cornelius.  Neil, born Nov. 13, 1869 in Lowndes Co., AL, 
married John Henderson Wallace on Sept. 21, 1887 in New Castle, AL.  

Martha Owen de Jarnette was born October 22, 1812 in Wadesboro, Anson Co.,
NC.  She married Cornelius Robinson on January 3, 1828 in Montgomery County,
Alabama.  She was the daughter of Mumford and Frances Hannah Pickett de
Jarnette of Anson County, NC.  After Mumford died in 1823, Frances came to
Autauga County, Alabama with her children, including Martha.  Martha Owen
de Jarnette Robinson died March 26, 1896 in Birmingham, AL.  She is said to
be buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, Lowndes Co., AL near her husband.

Dear Neil,
Three of the name De Jarnette were banished from France in 1685, on 
account of their religion, being Huguenots, Jean, Mumford and Christopher.
The name Mumford my father said was corrupted after the family emigrated or 
were banished into England.  I do not know the French of John, bur Monfort 
is the proper French.  I do not know how long the family remained in England, 
think they came to America in the late 17th or early 18th century and settled 
in Virginia.  My great grandfahter's name was Montfort, my grandfather's name 
was John.  He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War.  My grandmother was Jemima 
Owen, both of Virginia.  My father, Mumford (Monfort) De Jarnette, my mother 
Frances Hannah Pickett.  William Raiford Pickett, and Joseph Pickett, my 
mother's brothers, are Historic names.  My grandfather, James Pickett, also was 
a captain in the war for independence.  My grandfather, John De Jarnette, is 
mentioned in the History of Tennessee and North Carolina.  He was a member of 
the Legislature immediately after the war and remained so during his life, so 
says History.  My mother's father, James Pickett, my mother's mother, Martha 
Terry.  These are historic names.  General Pickett of the Confederacy is a 
cousin.  He was in Montgomery during the war and made himself know to Albert 
Pickett, son of William R. Pickett.  Albert Pickett wrote the History.  Mr. 
Robinson's father, Tod Robinson, his mother Martha Terry.  Tod Robinson's mother 
was Elizabeth Pickett.  Martha Terry's parents were James Terry and Ann Roberts.  
The family has intermarried.  In former days, we prided ourselves all around on 
account of our birth and position.  The family was always independent.  All the 
family formerly, what I know, were well educated.  My father's sisters Martha 
Pemberton and Phoebe Watkins.  His brother died early.  Had a cousin who lived 
in Wilkesboro, NC named Montfort De Jarnette.  The name Montfort was historic 
in France, Simon Montfort many, many years ago.  My great great grandfather
was Marquis De Jarnette.  The family became Episcopalians during the stay in
England. Mrs. Myers has the old Episcopal Prayer Book that the family brought 
From England. I will write Mary Myers to loan me the old prayer book.  There is 
a record of births of the old people in it.  If I remember anything else, I will 
write it down for you.
