Mrs Merriwether was a Miss Rice, daughter of Rev William Rice, who is doubles recollected by older inhabitants of the County, as a minster of the Protestant Methodist Church. Mrs. Meriwether’s mother was Miss Huddlestone of Mobile, her, Mrs Merriwether’s early life was passed in Hayneville, here, several children were born, and she lost some before they were grown, however, she raised a large family, three children survive her, one son in Florida, and two daughters Mrs. Lee Burt of California and Mrs R D Burt of Ft Deposit, she also leaves many grand and great grand children, among the former are Mr S R Merriwether, Mrs B T McWhorter, and Mrs E C Pricthett of Hayneville. Mrs Merriwether, though raised a Methodist, and was for many years a member of that church was converted to the Baptist belief in 1857 and connected herself with that church at F Deposit under the ministry of Re Mr Bell, and was until her death a consistent member; as long as her strength permitted she was in regular attendance at those meetings held annually, and no matter where she was, “She would go up to Jerusalem to worship once a year” as some friend said of her - Indeed her life showed much christian fortitude and patience under many trials and bereavements. She sent several sons to defend their Country in the war between the States and was one of many noble women who did their part so well during those dark days of the once “Sunny South.” Mrs Meriwether was a woman of refined gentle manners, charitable in word and action and her friends were legion; but, the “gathering latigo of years” had caused her months before her death to desist from the active duties of home and church, and death, was doubtless a welcome visiter [sic], as it was simply to conduct her to the “Eternal rest” promised to those who love the Lord. As her pastor will write an account of Mrs Meriwether’s death for Alabama Baptist we will not dwell longer on this, except to say we feel she has “Possed [sic] from death unto life” and is now enjoying that “Peace which passeth all understanding.” Additional Comments: Daughter of William Rice and Charlotte Huddleston Rice; wife of Samuel W Meriwether. Their known sons were Samuel Oliver Meriwether, Dulany Rice Meriwether, John A Meirwether, Benajah Meriwether, Josephus Meriwether, and David C Meriwether. Their known daughters were Martha Love Meriwether, Charlotte A Meriwether, Susan H Meriwether and Pollie Meriwether.
