He put an X mark for those and then went back and them in. For Monroe Black's father--he put an X mark first and then filled in Hugh Black. He didn't know his grandmother's name either. I believe the informant might have been referring to Hugh M. Black of Butler Co. I believe this Monroe Black (at age 16) did live in Hugh Black's household in 1870 (while his siblings were living with Robert Cole), but Hugh M. Black did not have sons named Monroe or Robert. Thomas M. Black did have sons named Monroe and Robert according to his estate record. The subject of this death certificate (James Monroe Black) had his brother Robert living with him on at least two censuses (posted in previous message here). Hugh M. Black was married in Reddock Springs and some of his family are buried at Liberty Methodist Cemetery in Butler Co. Hugh M. Black lived next door to Robert Cole in 1850, and Thomas M. Black lived next door to Robert Cole in 1860, so Hugh and Thomas must have been related. Monroe must have been a boy when his father and mother died. I've searched but cannot find a Hugh Black who could have been the father of this Monroe. By the way, my grandfather was another Hugh Black of Butler Co., and his grandfather was another James M. Black. I've been studying these Blacks for a few years, and I think mine were related to these. It's possible that my gg-gf James M. Black was a first cousin to Thomas M. Black. Still looking for proof!
