In the first place I desire to be decently buried and as to such worldly estate as it has pleased God to entrust me with I dispose of in the following manner. 1st That all my just debts be paid out of the first monies that may come in hand. 2nd. Unto Rebecca Martin the wife of William Martin I give and bequeath that lot or parcel of land that I bought of Reason Franklin adjoining James Martin’s lot north situated in the Town of Hayneville in the state and County above written, also a negro girl by the name of Matilda aged twenty nine and her son Isaac aged three years and her increase to have and to hold the same to her separate and individual use during her natural life and free from the debts in force and contracted of her Husband William Martin and after the death of said Rebecca Martin the said property to be sold and equally divided between such children of hers as may survive her, or to her child if but one survives her, and in default of a child or children, said property to be equally divided between William Gordon, Vilet Luckie, Nancy Gordon and Martin Gordon. 3rd. I give and bequeath unto John D. Gordon, the child of John D. Gordon deceased, not any more than five _____ either at my death, or the death of the rest of my children provided for in this will. 4th. I give and bequeath unto Nancy Gordon the following property, Patsey and her increase after the date of the will also Mary, Mandy, Catherine, Willlidga a lot of land that tract piece or parcel of land to wit: the East half of the north west quarter of section No two (2) in Township thirteen (13) of Range No fourteen (14) containing seventy nine acres and ninety three hundredth of an acre situated in the above written County. To her to hold the same to her during her natural life and after her death the said forgoing to be equally divided among such children as may survive her; if she would die without a child or children, said property to be equally divided between Rebecca Martin, William Gordon, Vilet Luckie and Martin Gordon. 5th. I give and bequeath unto Martin Gordon the following property Jackson a boy aged seventy years, Andrew aged thirty five years, Polly and her increase after the date of this will, also Early aged elevey, Caroline aged four years & Sarah a girl two and half years, also the following described lots tracts or parcels of lands to wit: The _____ half of the north East ¼ of the north ¼ of section No ten (10) Township thirteen (13) Range No fourteen (14) containing ninety two 90/100 acres also the south east quarter of section three (3) Township thirteen (13) Range No fourteen (14), also the southwest fourth ¼ of section two (2) township thirteen (13) Range fourteen (14) situated and being in the district of lands offered at Cahawba. To Have and to hold the same to him during his natural life and after his death the said property to be equally divided among such children as my survive him and if he should die without a child or children, the said property to be equally dived between Rebecca Martin, William Gordon, Vitel Suckis & Nancy Gordon. Codicil. I give and bequeath unto Nancy Gordon & Martin Gordon a negro woman by the name of Susan aged fifty years & her son James aged thirty years also a lot of land situated in the Town of Hayneville in the north East part of said town containing one & a half acres and also my carriage & stock of Horses & Cows, my household and kitchen furniture. The above named property to be equally divided between Nancy Gordon and Martin Gordon after all my just debts are paid. To have and to hold the same to them their natural lives & after their death the said property to be equally divided among such children as may survive them & if they should die without a child or children the said property to be equally divided between Rebecca Martin, William Gordon and Vilet Luckie. I do hereby appoint and nominate William Gordon and Martin Gordon my Executors to carry into effect this foregoing will. Robertson The State of Alabama Lowndes County This day came personally into open Court Jesse H. Robertson and after being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God deposeth and saith that he was present and saw Verlinda Gordon deceased in her lifetime sign seal publish and declare the above instrument of writing as her last Will and testament, and that the said Verlinda Gordon was at the time of sound disposing mind and memory and that he the said Jesse H. Robertson did at the request of the said Verlinda Gordon deceased in her lifetime and in her presence or when she might have easily seen, subscribed his name to the same as a witness thereto, with O. L. Durham & Samuel M. Bowie who also subscribed their names to the same as witnesses, also at the request of the Testatrix, all in the presence of each other & of the Testatrix as above mentioned. Additional Comments: Verlinda Gordon was born May 15, 1784 and died September 4, 1843. She is buried in the Hayneville Cemetery, Hayneville, Lowndes Co., AL. Her son, Martin G. Gordon is buried with her. He was born in Georgia on Apr. 20, 1816 and died Nov. 13, 1848.
