Matilda was born in South Carolina in about 1805. Matilda married William Grant, Sr. on January 28, 1858. State of Alabama } Lowndes County } Know all men by these presents that I, Matilda Grant of the County of Lowndes and State of Alabama, considering the uncertainty of life, and being of sound mind and memory, do make, declare, and publish this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills made by me. First: I desire all my debts to be paid from the proceeds of the growing crop and the entire residue thereof to belong to my loving husband, William Grant. Second: I give and bequeath to my children, James S. Parmer, Rowan J. W. F. Parmer, Hillary G. Parmer, Mary K. Ewing, wife of Samuel T. Ewing, Clinton D. Parmer, Amanda A. Lassiter, wife of John E. Lassiter and my grandchildren Esiloma (?) H. Parmer and Mary Benjamin Parmer, heirs of my son Benjamin W. Parmer, deceased, all my Estate personal and real, or mixed, consisting of my plantation on which I reside together with improvements of every kind, all my Negroes, horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, mules, household and kitchen furniture and farming utensils of every kind, to be equally divided among my children, share and share alike; my grandchildren above named to receive the share that would have been their father's. Third: I do nominate and appoint my son, Hillary W. [G.] Parmer, to be the Executor of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof, I have to this my last will and testament subscribed my name and affixed my seal this the sixth day of July, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one. F. C. Webb F. L. Ellis John H. Herlong Stat of Alabama } Lowndes County } In Probate Court, Sept. 23rd, 1873 Before me, J. V. McDuffie, Judge of Probate in and for said County, comes F. L. Ellis, who in open Court, being duly sworn, says that he and F. C. Webb and John H. Herlong were present and saw Mrs. Matilda Grant sign an instrument of writing, purporting to be the last will and testament of said Matilda Grant, now deceased, which instrument is now shown to him, on the day of the date thereof that said instrument was then duly exhibited to them the day of the date thereof, and that they heard the said Matilda Grant then and there declare that the said instrument on writing was her last will and testament, and that they respectively subscribed their names as witness thereto, at the request of Matilda Grant and in her presence and in the presence of each other. He further says that at the time of making said Will, the said Matilda Grant was of sound mind and disposing memory, of full age and under no constraint and that she died an inhabitant of this County.
