William was a prominent businessman in Benton, Lowndes County. He married later in life to Martha Frances "Fannie" Young, daughter of George W. Young and Susan M. R. Smith. Fannie was born about 1837 and died before 1870. William and Fannie had at least three children: Frances "Fannie" M., Molly E. and Sallie Kendall Ernest. Molly E. was only found in the 1870 US Census, Lowndes County, Alabama, age 8. There is no other record for Molly. Fannie married Edward R. Kendall, son of John N. Kendall and Sarah R. Riggs. Sallie married Robert Jackson Staggers, son of William Lifrage Staggers and Martha Elizabeth Staggers (William and Martha were 1st cousins). Will of William L. Ernest Lowndes County, Alabama Will Book C, pages 138 - 140 I, W. L. Ernest, a citizen of Benton, Lowndes County, Alabama, being of sound mind but feeble in body, knowing the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death, do hereby make this my last will and testament. 1st: I desire and direct that my Executors hereinafter named shall pay my funeral expenses and all my honest debts as soon after my death as may be practicable. 2nd: I bequeath to my daughter, Fannie M., the piano at my house which was purchased for her. 3rd: I bequeath to my daughter, Sallie, my gold watch, which I am now wearing. 4th: I bequeath and devise to my two daughters, Fannie M. and Sallie Ernest, the residue of my real and personal property consisting of notes, accounts, credits and deposits of every kind to be divided equally between them as they become of age. 5th: I desire and direct that my Executors shall, after my death, advise at once the Manhattan and Equitable Live Insurance Company of my demise, and that they shall attend to the collection of the money which will be due on the policies which I hold against those companies, and as far as I can do to. I constitute T. J. Ernest, one of my Executors, the guardianship of my children, the matter of collecting the above insurance moneys and investing the same for the benefit and use of my children until they shall marry or become of age. 6th: I hereby constitute and appoint T. J. Ernest, J. N. Kendall, and E. A. Garrett to be my lawful Executors and it is my wish and desire that the said Executors shall not be required to give bond what so ever for the administration and settlement of my Estate, and it is my desire that my Executors shall settle debts, collect and compromise claims in any manner they may think best. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, and declare this to by my last will and testament this, the 17th day of April, in the year of our Lord, Eighteen hundred and seventy-five.
