Files, a soldier of the Revolution, in the 78th year of his age. He was a native of Virginia, and emigrated to South Carolina at an early age. In the War of the Revolution, he manifested his love of Liberty by joining his countrymen under General Pickens, and upon all occasions showed his devotion to his country's cause, by offering himself as a willing sacrifice upon her altar. At the memorable battle of Cowpens, he was one of the brave men under General Morgan, that assisted in effecting the total defeat of the British forces under Tarleton, and continued in the service of his country, when occasion offered, until the colonies were acknowledged free, sovereign, and independent States. Betweeh the two great political parties arrayed under Adams and Jefferson, he took the Jefferson side in politics, and continued a warm and consistent Democraft until his death. He embraced the Christian religion at an early age, was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church for more than forty years, and continued a faithful follower of the Saviour to the end. Being asked by an affectionate son, in his last moments, if he knew him, he made no effort to answer. He was then asked if he knew Jesus. He motioned his head in assent, and with faint articulation said, he did. His character was without blemish; he was a man of great moral worth, truly the friend of man, and beloved by all who knew him. "Thus sleep the brave, who rise to rest, With all their country's honors blest."
