He was born December 25, 1755, in Augusta County, Virginia. He enlisted while living in Washington County, Virginia, in 1776, in Captain Robert Craig's company, Colonel Christie's regiment. During 1777 and 177S he served under Captain Matthew Willoughby. He enlisted again in March 1779 in Captain Josiah Harland's company, Colonel Benjamin Logan's regiment. He enlisted again in November 1780 and served in Captain Joseph Black's Company, Colonel Arthur Campbell's regiment. He was in several battles with the Indians.
