Humes, Mrs. Humes, and Miss Rose Sheffey left for New York on Thursday last, the first two for 12 or 14 days, Miss Rose for an indefinite period. Mrs. Dr. Greenway, Miss Sunie White, and Master Addison Greenway returned from New York last week. We hear that Mrs. Greenway and her children will start to their home at Hot Springs, Ark., of Friday next. Miss Shelby White, who accompanied Mrs. Greenway to New York, is visiting a friend at Newport, Rhode Island. We were happy to meet, on Sunday last, Mrs. Wilson C. Bibb, of Rahway, N. J., guest of Mr. W. B. Leedy, and Mrs. Haughton, of New York, guest of her brother, Capt. John D. Brandon. Miss Johnnie Winter left, last Saturday night, for Louisville, to visit friends there. Col. W. W. Garth leaves, to-night, for Aberdeen, Miss., called thither under the following circumstances: Nov. 14, horses, drawing a carriage, ran away, and threw out Col. Garth’s sister, Mrs. Dr. Dancy and Mrs. Gen. Gregg, seriously injuring both. Mrs. Dancy, we are glad to hear, is getting well. We regret to hear that Mrs. Gregg’s condition excites grave tears, and Col. Garth has been written for. Dr. Samuel J. Withers, of Mooresville, spent several days in Huntsville, last week. Col. W. B. Jones and Mr. W. R. Whitman, of New Market, are in town. We are glad to hear that the clever young typo, Johnnie Hay, who is down with typhoid fever, is much better. We regret to learn that Tanc?ed Betts, son of Judge E. C. Betts, has typhoid fever at the University of Alabama, and his brother, Rostan Betts, has gone there to nurse him. Chas. A. Fariss, who now occupies the position of night clerk at the Stanton House, Chattanooga, spent several hours with friends here last Saturday. Mr. Joseph Martin went to Gainesville, Ala., last week, and has returned, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Whitsitt and her children. Hernando D. Wood, after traveling extensively in the interest of a wholesale drug house of Louisville, Ky., arrived here to-day. Mr. Alonzo Elliott is going into the fruit and vegetable growing business extensively next year, near this city. A good move. - - Birmingham Iron Age. DIED: Death of a Noble Woman ------------------------------------- Mr. W. H. Donegan showed us a telegram, to-day, announcing the death of Mrs. Andrew Erwin, formerly Mrs. Jas. W. Camp, in Nashville, Tenn., last week, of pneumonia. Mrs. Erwin is, doubtless remembered by many people in Madison County, for her Christian virtues, and her generous and refined hospitality. Confederate soldiers will bless her memory for her many kind and considerate attentions. We cherish our memory, of her as a very dear friend, and heartily sympathize with her relatives in their sad bereavement. LOCAL NEWS Accidental Oversight ------------------------------ We feel like clothing ourself with sackcloth and ashes, and crying, as the French Catholics do, when confessing their sins of omission – c’est ma faute, c’est ma faute, c’est ma plus grande faute. Our printer overlooked the following in setting up type, and we overlooked the omission in reading proof of the Parlor Entertainment at our house, reported last week: “INSTRUMENTAL SOLOS. – Original compositions by Mrs. Sam. Donegan. RECITATION. – The Mouse, Miss Carrington,” To mention the names of these accomplished ladies gives ample assurance that their performances were prominent features of the entertainment.
