Mayor Thos. W. White returned from a trip to Kentucky on Saturday last. Thos. F. Mastin, Esq., who, for several years past, has been the efficient Private Secretary of Chief Justice Brickell, has resigned, to engage in business in Huntsville. Wm. Vaughan, Esq., a promising young lawyer of Huntsville, has gone to Montgomery, to aid Chief Justice Brickell in the preparation of a new edition of Brickell’s Digest of Alabama Reports. Hon. H. C. Speake, after completing his circuit in Jackson County, on Saturday last, returned to his home, to remain till February next, when he will begin his semi-annual round of the counties of his Circuit. We met Hon. John B. McClellan, of Limestone, and John B. Floyd, of Madison, in our city, yesterday. Geo. S. Gordon, Esq., has resumed occupation of his dwelling, and Mr. Archibald Campbell, who occupied it during Mr. Gordon’s absence to Europe, has removed to a part of the Schaudies block occupied by Mrs. Rice. Thomas P. Whitehead, nephew of Mayor Whited, of New Hope, had one of his hands badly lacerated, losing two of his fingers, the other day, in the gin of Isaac D. Wann. Every week nearly, we see in the papers, or hear of, men and children being injured in gins or other machinery by carelessness. Strange it is that people won’t keep their eyes open and their wits awake. Dr. Francisco Rice, our State Senator, is in town to-day. He is prominently mentioned for the next Secretary of State in Alabama. We were pleased to meet, yesterday, in our city, Dr. R. M. Fletcher, of Madison, and Dr. H. P. Bone, of Maysville. Mr. John R. Mason and his three children left, on Monday last, for Cold Water, San Jacinto County, Texas, where they will, probably, reside in the future. Mr. Mason has long been a good citizen of Huntsville, and we regret his departure from our midst, but wish him much good fortune in his new home. Hernando D. Wood is now connected with the Detroit Lock Co., Detroit, Mich., having resigned his position as traveling agent for a Louisville drug house. Chas. R. Pickard is among the busy workers at Washington. We notice his chirography on public documents sent to this office. MARRIED: JONES - ERWIN. - At the residence of John L. Rison, Huntsville, Ala., Dec. 7, 1881, by Rev. Jos. B. Erwin, J. ROBERT JONES to MISS MYRA ERWIN, daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Erwin - all of this city. We extend our hearty congratulations to our young friends, and wish them a prosperous and happy life. OLIVER - WALKER. - At the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. Wm. Walker, Nov 30, 1881, by Rev. Thos. O. Sumners, D. D., WALTER R. OLIVER, ESQ., son of Rev. Dr. C. D. Oliver, to MISS MOLLIE WALKER. HERRING - WALKER. - In Campbellsville, Giles Go., Tenn., Dec. 8, 1881, W. J. HERRING of Triana, Ala., to MISS ADA WALKER. The happy pair have our best wishes for a long and happy voyage over the matrimonial sea, and may they realize their most sanguine expectations. LOCAL NEWS Superintendent of Streets, B. W. Blake, is earning just praise from our citizens by his judicious and energetic work in putting the streets of Huntsville in good order. A good citizen, who had seen and experienced his good work, told us, this morning, “Old man Blake is the best Street Superintendent we have ever had. He goes, and sees the thing done right, and he ain’t afraid to work himself.” So say we. Mr. Archibald Campbell has purchased the Joseph Ward store house on the South side of our Public Square, now occupied by the Advocate office, but does not purpose to take possession before Jan’y 1, 1883. A Campbell & Son have rented the Home Protection corner store on the South side of the Public Square, for the year, 1882. Week before last, we announced the shooting of a maniac, James Ikard, near New Hope, in this county, by his cousin, J. C. Clark, to save his own life. On Monday last, Justice A. Whited, of Hew Hope, told us that Clark had a preliminary examination before him, Dec. 10, and was discharged on the ground that he shot Ikard in self-defense. Mr. Whited told us that Ikard was paralyzed in his lower limbs from Clark’s shots, but had recovered his senses, so far, at least, as to say that Clark did right in shooting him, and ought not to be punished. Ikard has an insane brother in our County Jail now, because there is no room for him in the State Insane Asylum. More to come…him at Scottsboro. Sheriff Skelton tried to arrest him in the train, but he jumped oft, and while running, was shot at three times, and a number of citizens joined in the pursuit, and he was caught and put in the Scottsboro jail. Sheriff Cooper and Joe went up, yesterday, and brought Walter down and lodged him in our County Jail, last night. Sheriff Cooper tells us that, when he went to Scottsboro for Walter Pickett, there was great excitement there at the murder, on Sunday night, of a most respectable colored man, who was shot through a crack in his house on Sunday night, while he was eating his supper, and was killed. A negro man had been arrested as the assassin, and was under examination by a Coroner’s Jury, while Mr. Cooper was in Scottsboro. He does not remember the names of the murdered man or his supposed murderer. ALABAMA NEWS We regret to learn, from the Tuscumbia Democrat, that Hon. R. S.
