Thompson, the accomplished Art Instructor, in the Methodist Conference Institute at Jackson, Tenn., after spending the Christmas holiday with the family of her brother, Dr. J. J. Dement, returned to Jackson last week. Milton Humes, Esq., returned from a trip to Adingdon, Va., on Sunday last. Dr. Nich. D. Richardson and wife are visiting his brother, Hon. Wm. Richardson. Judge W. R. Wood, of Florence, is attending our Chancery Court. He speaks encouragingly of the building of the railroad he is advocating from Evansville, Ind., via Clarksville, Tenn., to Florence, Ala., and, thence, to a more Southern terminus. Mr. Algernon Wilkinson and wife, after a short visit to his relatives here, returned to his duties at Richmond, Va., last week, accompanied by Miss Katie Wilkinson, of this city. We are rejoice to hear that Dr. A. S. Harris, one of the most sterling citizens of Madison County, has greatly improved in health and walking about. May he live many years of healthy, happiness, and prosperity! Mrs. C. C. Clay is at the residence of her brother-in-law, Col. H. L. Clay. We welcome back Mr. and Mrs. John L. Fariss from the country to their old home in Huntsville. We regret to learn of the illness of Mrs. Erskine Mastin, Jas. H. Mastin, son of the late Gustavus L. Mastin, Henry Speake, son of Hon. H. C. Speake, and Post-master Reed. Prof. Bristol, who has been in our city for several weeks past in the interest of a dress-cutting apparatus, is seriously ill at the Stegall House, but was somewhat better at last accounts. We are pleased to meet Mr. Theo. Lacy, of Dallas Co., Ala., in our city. DEATHS Death of John R. A. Johnson ----------------------------------------- Circumstances beyond our control prevented our paying a proper tribute to this worthy young man, in announcing his death, which occurred in Huntsville, Sunday, January 1, 1882. He was a Virginian by birth, but had lived in Huntsville several years, clerking for mercantile houses, and, last, for Messrs. Duncan & Rand. He was one of the most worthy and exemplary young men in the business and social circles of Huntsville, and therefore, we sincerely deplore his death, and condole with his bereaved relatives and friends. He was in the 24th year of his age. The funeral took place on the following Tuesday morning, from the residence of Mr. W. T. Duncan, Rev. W. F. Kone officiating; and the large attendance of relatives and sympathizing friends manifested the high estimation which he was held in this city. LOCAL NEWS Tribute to Hon. C.C. Clay ------------------------------------ At a called meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Huntsville, Ala., held January 4, 1882, the following resolutions of respect to the memory of Ex-Senator Clement C. Clay were unanimously adopted: Resolved, That we have heard, with profound sorrow, of the death of our distinguished fellow-citizen, Ex-Senator Clement C. Clay. Resolved, That we tender our most heartfelt sympathy to his grief-stricken wife and bereaved relatives. Resolved, That, as a mark of respect for the fidelity, ability and patriotism with which he has served this his native County and State, and as a recognition of his statesmanship which has given him a national fame, it is ordered that these resolutions be drawn off by the City Clerk and sent to Mrs. Virginia C. Clay, his devoted wife. It is further Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to each of the city papers for publication. James E. Seat, J. M. Hutchens, J. S. Erwin, Committee. Mr. James Wells has bought of Jas. B. Ford his stock of fine Brandies, Whiskies, Wines, and other liquors, and is running a saloon at Ford’s old stand. Mr. Wells’s well-known character gives assurance that no saloon in this city will be better conducted.
