Grant, formerly Chief Engineerer of the M. & C, R. R., passed through Huntsville, last week, from his Texas sheep ranch, dressed in a navy blue shirt and otherwise Texan costume. Capt. Pegram, of the M. & C. R. R., was in town last Friday. Chancellor Graham, having completed the January Term of the Madison Chancery Court, has gone to Scottsboro to hold the Chancery Court there. Dr. Samuel J. Withers, of Mooresville, was in Huntsville yesterday and to-day. Thos. H. McAllister, the accommodating Western Union Telegraph operator in this city, has been confined to his room for a week or two past by indisposition. Miss Parks, of Hopkinsville, is now manipulating the wires in his stead. We hope he will soon be at this post again. Mrs. Geo. P. Beirne, Misses Eliza Gray and Jane Beirne, and Mrs. Wm. H. Echols returned from New York last Saturday. Mrs. Turner Clanton is visiting her father, Gov. Chapman, and other relatives in this city. We understand that D. D. Shelby, Esq., has gone to Washington, and Paul L. Jones, Esq., will go there shortly, to represent Lowe in his contest for Gen. Wheeler’s seat in Congress. DEATHS Death of Miss Bessie Hopkins We, in common with many North Alabama friends, regret to hear of the death of Miss Bessie Hopkins, at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Eliza Hopkins, in Nashville, on Friday last, after two days’ illness from a sudden attack of paralysis. She was a young lady of fine intellect and one of the best of daughters. Her bereaved relatives have our sincere sympathy. LOCAL NEWS We are sorry to hear the Mr. John W. Campbell’s kitchen, near Whitesburg, caught fire, one night last week, and was consumed, together with his dining- room and smoke-house adjoining, dining-room furniture, and, also 2,000 lbs. of meat, belonging to him and his son-in-law. Morrow and Samuel W. Sanford, who are named as Executors in a certain instrument in writing, purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Mary Oaks deceased, late a resident-citizen of the County of Madison, State of Alabama, and surrenders to the custody of the Court said Instrument in writing, and present their petition, asking that the same be admitted to Probate as the last will of the said Mary Oaks: it is ordered by the Court that the 15th day of February, 1882 Be and is appointed a day on which to consider said petition, together with the proof submitted in support of the same. It is, also, ordered that notice, by publication for three successive weeks, be given in the Huntsville Democrat, a newspaper published I this County, to Mattie Thompson, who resides at Kelso, Lincoln County, Tennessee; George Oaks, who resides near Elkton, in Giles County, Tennessee; and Mary Wheeless, who resides in the State of Texas; giving time, notice of the filing of the petition, nature of the same, and the time appointed by the Court fro the hearing; at which time, all persons interested can appear and contest the same, if they see proper to do so.
