We are glad to hear of the convalescence of Mrs. W. B. Green and _?_Bristol from typhoid fever. We are sorry to hear that Katie Steele, daughter of Matt. W. Steele, and Bessie Turner, are down with typhoid fever. We were pleased to meet, to-day, Mr. Jno. F. Newman, who, leaving his country on the Tennessee river, for a day or two, gives the sunshine of his countenance to his city friends. Misses Mattie and Katie Barnard are visiting Mrs. Brinkley in Memphis. Miss Susie Williamson has gone to Arkansas. We are glad to hear of Miss Annie Young’s success with her school at Gurleysville. Miss Fannie Carothers left for Chattanooga, on Thursday last, which place will be her home in future. She will be greatly missed by a host of friends in Huntsville. We wish her well in her new home. D. D. Shelby, Esq., returned from Washington, D. C., last week, whither he went as attorney for Lowe in his contest for gen. Wheeler’s seat. It is said, the case will not be reached in the House in less than two months. DIED: PASSED THROUGH DEATH INTO LIFE ETERNAL, ON Tuesday, Morning, Jan. 31st, 1882, ELIZA GRAY, Beloved daughter of James P. and Lucy Beirne Matthews, aged two years and eight months; “For of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” LOCAL NEWS Last Wednesday night, Mr. John Hertzler’s residence, 8 miles Southwest of Huntsville, was completely destroyed by fire, caused by a defective flue. He has our deepest sympathy in his loss. ALABAMA NEWS Jeff Davis is the picture of good health. His European trip has given him renewed vigor; and from the protest that went up in his defense, when it was understood that Joe Johnston had accused him of wrongly appropriating Confederate funds, we imagine the grand old hero has a host of friends yet, who love him for his pure, nobility of character. – Decatur News.
