LANE DIES OF PNEUMONIA --------------------- Widow of Prominent Editor And Publisher Was Ill Only Short Time --------------------- Mrs. Eleanor Abercrombie Lane, widow of the late Charles P. Lane, for many years editor and publisher of the Huntsville Tribune and associated with other Alabama newspapers from time to time during his busy career, died Tuesday night at 11:20 o’clock after being ill but two days of pneumonia. Her death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. W. McAllister, wife of the mayor of Huntsville with whom she had made her home during the later years of her life and being unexpected was shock to relatives and friends many of whom had not been informed of her illness. Mrs. Lane had been prominent in the social affairs of Huntsville for more than forty years beginning with the time when she came with her husband to make their home in the city. She was born in Mobile January 22, 1861, being the daughter of John Lucas and America Watson Abercrombie. She and Mr. Lane were married at Tuskegee January 4, 1881 and to them were born the following sons and daughters: Madge Westmoreland, who married Judge Milo Abercrombie of Tuskegee; Mattie Morton, now Mrs. Henry Watson of Tuskegee; Sallie Bradley, now Mrs. Carl N. Brown of Greensboro, N. C.; Charles Day Lane, former sheriff of Madison County; Elizabeth Richardson, wife of Alex McAllister, mayor of Huntsville; William Rison Lane, business man of Huntsville; and James A. Lane, world war soldier who was killed in France. There are two great grandchildren. Her husband, Editor Charles P. Lane died suddenly in 1907 and for a time Mrs. Lane continued publication of the Evening Tribune. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary being a Gold Star member, was a member of other patriotic organizations and took an active part in social affairs until a short time before the last illness. She became ill Sunday night of pneumonia and became rapidly worse, the end coming before physicians and relatives realized that the crisis was near. Arrangements have been made for the funeral service to be held at 3 o’clock Thursday at the residence of Mayor and Mrs. Alex McAllister, Eustis street with Rev. Cary Gamble, rector of the church of the Nativity officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill cemetery with the following friends of the family serving as pall bearers: R. E. Smith, Roy Cooper, Whitson Walker, Charles Lyle, Tom Naugher, Marcus Pender, Ashford Todd and James Conner.
