The Charlotte Journal Jul 23, 1840 (Charlotte, North Carolina)
Death of Judge Smith. --  The Hon. William Smith, formerly
of this State, and late of Alabama, died at Huntsville, in that
State, on the 26th ult. of congestive fever, aged 78 years.
He filled a large and honorable space in the public eye
during his long life.  ---- Charlotte Observer
