He was 86. Mr. Townes played the leprechaun in the musical ''Finian's Rainbow'' on Broadway for two years. His other Broadway credits included ''Tobacco Road'' and ''Twelfth Night.'' Among his films were ''The Brothers Karamazov'' and ''Sanctuary.'' On television he appeared in "Gunsmoke," "The Twilight Zone," "'Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Studio One," "Playhouse 90" and "Star Trek," among other shows. Mr. Townes retired in 1970 and became an Episcopalian minister at the Church of the Bells in Palm Springs, Calif. A native of Huntsville, Alabama, he was a graduate of Columbia University.
