VOLUNTEER ENLISTMENT
State of Alabama, Town of Stevenson
I, Andrew D. Mitchell born in Forsyth, Co. in the State of Georgia aged 
eighteen years, and by occupation a farmer, DO HEREBY ACKNOWLEDGE to have 
volunteered this Eighteenth day of February 1865, to serve as a soldier in the 
ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, for the period of three years,  unless 
sooner discharged by proper authority: Do also agree to accept such bounty, 
pay rations, and clothing  as they are, or may be, established by law for 
volunteers. And I, Andrew D. Mitchell so solemly swear, that I will service 
them honestly and faithfully against all enemies or opposers whomsoever; that 
I will observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and 
the orders of officers appointed over me, according to the Rules and Articles 
of War. 

Sworn and subscribe to, at Stevenson, AL this 18th day of February 1865, 
before Jude H. Shurtleff, Major. 1st Alabama Calvary.

I CERTIFY ON HONOR, That I have minutely inspected the Volunteer, Andrew D. 
Mitchell previously to his enlistment, and that he is entirely sober when 
enlisted; that to the best of judgment and belief, he is of lawful age, and 
that, in accepting him as duly qualified to perform the duties of an able 
bodied soldier, I have strictly observed the Regulations which govern the 
recruiting service. This soldier has Black eyes, Dark hair, Light complexion, 
is 5 feet 9 inches high. Presented by W.D. McPherson, Rect’g Agt. For New 
York. J.W. Delany, Sgt. Maj. 50th Regiment of Infantry IA ret, Volunteers.

Mustered into the service of the United States, for three years or during the 
war, from date of enlistment, Company  (blank) 1st Alabama Cvary Volunteers, 
on the 19th day of February 1865, at Nashville, Tenn 
$100 US Bounty paid, and accredited to Sherman, Chantauqua Co. 31st Dist. New 
York.

Additional Comments:
Andrew D. Mitchell he was the son of Samuel F. Mitchell and Susannah Redbird, 
He married on 24 August 1865 to Lurilda E. Cagle. Both are buried at Thornhill 
Church of Christ in Marion County, Alabama.
